Formally one half of BBC 6 Music and KEXP-championed electronic post-punk duo Sink Ya Teeth, Maria Uzor releases her debut solo album ’Soft Cuts’ on 13th October on Castles In Space.
The mutant electronic artist has recently collaborated with Acid Klaus, Baba Ali, Chk Chk Chk and A Certain Ratio and released 3 EPs since lockdown. Soft Cuts is her first full-length.
Soft Cuts is a stunningly hybrid album – electronic, eclectic and esoteric – clearly revelling in its own diversity and willfulness, but also heavily loaded with some absolute stone-cold bangers. There are echoes of everything from the techno of Aphex Twin to the funk of Zapp, with a bit of everything else in between.
“There’s also UK garage, Sylvester, Flying Lotus, Siouxsie And The Banshees, dubstep, Drexciya, ’90s RnB, even Disney,” explains Maria of the myriad influences at play on the album, “but I didn’t set out to write anything in a particular style, I just opened myself up to the creative process and it came out like that.”
“In the past, I sometimes felt a need to try and shoehorn myself into a category but now I’m just embracing the fact that I don’t fit neatly into anything, and that’s fine. I fit neatly into my own self expression”
