In the past we've offered exclusive tickets for shows that will sell out and will continue to do so, so that's one reason for being on the list. There's also a monthly competition with a prize of free entry to all gigs that month!!!!
DEMO SITUATION We like old school CDs in the post. Please include brief details of your band history (eg gigs played, supports etc) and upcoming shows. Please send to: Band Bookings, Windmill Brixton, 22 Blenheim Gardens, London SW2 5BZ and we'll listen to them as soon as we can. If you've sent in a demo we will contact you if we have a slot or think that there might be a possibility of one. We also look at myspace requests as well but priority given to CDs. Either way, we can't consider anything without a brief note on what you're up to and what gigs you have already got booked. For urgent stuff (ie gig production) call on +44 20 8674 0055 or email windmillbrixton AT yahoo.co.uk. Just drag an absolute minimum of 30 people along and we'll take their money. No seriously that is NOT how the Windmill works. We are not a glorified pay-to-play venue. Read on.... We love good music and while we need to shift beer to put on nights at such low prices we're after quality music first and foremost. It's no good phoning up and saying "we'll ram the place out cos we've got lots of mates" if your music sucks. We book proactively, in the sense that we hear of good bands from our regulars or bands that have already played the windmill and get them to play. We also take recommendations from people in the industry that we work with and trust. We also listen to all demos BUT due to the constant workload of putting on 6 shows per week we cannot in engage in critique or communication other than confirmation of receipt (the email address is: windmillbrixton@yahoo.co.uk). In short …IF WE HAVE A GIG FOR YOU WE WILL CONTACT YOU. Sorry if that sounds harsh but the time isn’t there. But please do send in demos because that’s how we found some of our most favourite bands. The address is: BAND BOOKINGS WINDMILL BRIXTON 22 BLENHEIM GARDENS LONDON SW2 5BZ Playing the Windmill: 1. We will do our utmost to put you on a bill that will fit in with your music. We try to theme nights so that bands (and their fans) will enjoy the other bands’ music. We won’t put on krautrock with folk and punk on the same bill just because we think all three bands will pull 30 people each and the place will look busy. That’s no fun for anyone and we don’t do that. 2. We don’t issue bossy contracts or take any money out of the door. Yes folks, bands get 100% of the door money and we divide it up at the end of the night on an amicable basis taking into consideration who brought the crowds, who has touring expenses and who brought the gear. And, since it’s cheaper to get in than any other venue on the London circuit, we discourage guestlists – you might as well have the money. 3. We do have regular gig-goers at our place but you never know when they’ll turn up so don’t count on a few tables of eager gig-goers waiting for you on your arrival. We trust all bands to try their best to get people to gigs – if you don’t do that you’re not only letting down yourselves and us but also the other bands on the bill. If we all work together we’ll have a good night…and you’ll get paid. 4. We’ll list all gigs on a range of mags, websites and radio stations. 5. We talk to industry people (A&R, PR, management) all the time and if we think you’re something they might be interested in we’ll pass on your details. | |   | Tips For Sending In Demos Some of this stuff is really basic but you’d be surprised how few bands do it. Basically if you look organised, there’s a better chance of us wanting you down, so please enclose: A CDR – make sure it’s burnt properly and has the band name, contact number, email and website on it. A Brief biog. No need to hype yourselves up; just tell us your background, what gigs you’ve already played etc A list of forthcoming dates would also be useful. DON'T send us an email an say check out your site. We haven't time to go searching and downloading MP3s and unless specifically requested we will not listen to MP3s or myspace.com tunes. | |   | WINDMILL BRIXTON, A SHORT HISTORY OF We didn't set out to be a venue as such but live music at the Windmill Brixton, just kinda evolved. Late night sessions at this bar revealed that the regulars carried a wealth of experience in musicianship, sound engineering and promoting, and since we drank there anyway we decided that we should get a good band down now and again to listen to. The bands came. They loved the informality and the fact that we bothered to pay them, and, some five years later the Windmill is known far beyond the backstreet in Brixton where it's situated. Although we're just a little backstreet place, Windmill Brixton has gotten a glowing "Ace Place" review in Time Out, was called "your new favourite venue" by Drownedinsound.com and has been namechecked over the airwaves by the likes of XFM's John Kennedy and Radios 1's Steve Lamacq. Gigs have been reviewed in NME, Kerrang! and other mags and The Independent newspaper named us one of the TOP TEN VENUES IN THE UK (the only other London venues to make the cut were Brixton Academy and Cargo). We feel we get these accolades for a number of reasons. Entry is cheap. So is the beer. There's a nice candlelit atmosphere, friendly staff and (less friendly) dogs on the roof. But most important of all is the quality of music - it's no good telling us that you'll ran the place with your mates; if your music sucks we aren't interested. We book and cheerlead bands we likeand many have played several times. Well that's more or less the history, cos we're more concerned about the great bands that will be playing in the future. If you wanna gig, see above. | |   |
