*Something Beginning With L
HORSE SHOES (Brooklyn, NY)
...are Jacob from The Drums, plus another guy called Drew, and they play synthpop with strong melodies and pure pop hooks influenced by bands like The Wake, New Order, The Field Mice, Air France…
Great stuff.
www.myspace.com/horseshoesmusic

PANAMA KINGS (Belfast)
Fresh and fun indie foursome follow up some radio 1 airplay and recent supports slots to the likes of Young Knives, British Sea Power and The undertones with a quickfire visit to London.
'drawing comparisons with indie luminaries such as Modest Mouse, Pixies, and the Walkmen, Panama Kings employ razor-sharp Gang Of Four guitars over dance-rock rhythms, frenetic keyboards and just enough Sonic Youth noise to stay this side of melodic, with Niall Kennedy’s Superchunk/ Flaming Lips-esque vocal style perhaps being the bands strongest suit.' - Strummerville
www.myspace.com/panamakings

SOMETHING BEGINNING WITH L
...are a girl-boy-girl trio from South London and Suffolk.
Taking inspiration from 4AD's alt rock era of the Nineties, SBL create melodies as sweet as any chart buster, but with a desire to make the arrangements twist and turn at tangents to the mainstream. 'wonderfully woozy, synth-laden pastoralia.' - The Sunday Times

SKINNY LOVE
A pure power-house two piece that are currently rattling their wears around London, Skinny Love prove that with a world class drummer and amps the size of tower blocks they can match any band for talent and loudness (without need for a myspace or website, so you'll have to trust us n their brilliance)

CLINKER
..are a Psychedelic Shoegazey Dance Pop hybrid that sounds refreshing and vital.
www.myspace.com/clinkerandoperadog

EUGENE MACHINE
Exciting new synth-laden electro dubfunk groove pop machine.
'After a stunning remix for White Rose Movement, Eugene Machine now step out with a killer two track release on Robotnik Records. 'Scent of Money' is a throbbing dance monster with a definite nod to the 80's, especially it's big, big chorus... hot stuff.' - Rough Trade shops
www.myspace.com/eugenemachineuk

DORA BRILLIANT
..describe their sound as the 'chop chop sound' and we don't quite know what that means but we'd have a guess that this funky pop trio have listened and learned form Clor and possibly even Steely dan. We approve on both counts.

THE WELCOME COMMITTEE (London/Southend)
We love a bit of experimental pop and with tunes like these, there aren't much better outfits around than TWC. Already much rotated by XFM DJ John Kennedy, we're pleased to host their first London show of 2010.
'create a kind of indietronica full of emotive vocals and anthemic builds that has garnered a lot of radio interest.' - Dazed & Confused, Oct '09

*Jukebox Leans
+ more tba
Now onto it's 16th outing, BACKSTREETS is a semi-regular night of music featuring some of London's best bands and DJs spinning classics. Great music to get drunk to on a Friday night!

THE BRIDPORT DAGGER
Fresh off tour from supporting our old friends The Rumble Strips, the up-and-coming Dagger are rather tasty and rather unique: a bassless flamencobilly/garage-folk trio, specializing in short, echoey blasts of glorious noise.
'brothel-creepin blues with awesome atmospherics' - NME
'Swinging beats tinged with twangy rockabilly riffs and moody Orbison esque vocals. Haunting and seriously melodic, the drama the Bridport Dagger expels is somehow extremely alluring.' i-D Magazine
www.myspace.com/thebridportdagger

THE WINTER OLYMPICS
This is the big one for this now infamous party-rock band from London. They’ll be celebrating the release of their new single ‘Attention All Departments’ on the Office Rocks label and the end of Vancouver 2010 with this very special show for Backstreets. Live, the Olympics are still an unlikely riot: all loose loud guitars, warehouse sized rave keys and lion-lunged love songs about girls, work and spaceships. They play like five IT guys who happen to be hiding The Stooges inside, they sound like a bomb going off inside a tiny radio.
www.myspace.com/winterolympics
www.thewinterolympicsband.com

MOTEL TIJUANA
Sounding like a Harley running on Tequila, Motel Tijuana are classic southern rawk and roll with a line-up from around the world and their debauched songs that are the soundtrack to too much tequila and too much late night antics. Expect to be dancing with our cousin and drinking heavily by the end of this set.

DAWN KINNARD (USA)
Dawn Kinnard who now spends much of her time in the U.K grew up in Pennsylvania, as the wayward daughter of a Baptist preacher. She was inspired by early blues, country and gospel and learned to play guitar at 16, when she became obsessed with Elvis. Her husky singing voice has been compared to Cat Power, Shelby Lynne, Billie Holiday, Lucinda Williams and Nina Persson of The Cardigans.
By her early twenties she was riding her beloved Harley-Davidson cross-country under big skies until she sold it to finance her very first recording, an eponymous eight-tracker released on her own Rusted Rose label, followed in 2008 she released ‘The Courtesy Fall’ which is full of expansive-yet-intimate, beautiful songs about freedom, insomnia and paranoia. At the centre of it all, there's Kinnard's smoke and honey voice which wraiths around and then cuts through the piano and strings and Dusty In Memphis percussion. Dawn has toured with Ron Sexsmith and collaborated with Ed Harcourt and Cerys Matthews as well as appearing on Later With Jools Holland.
www.myspace.com/dawnkinnard

CATHERINE PAVER
...writes and sings folk-and-country influenced songs that tell stories, which are inspired by her travels and from English folk tales. She accompanies herself in inimitable finger-picking style on acoustic guitar and has supported great storytelling songwriters such as Bob Cheevers, James Keelaghan and Clive Gregson. Her recently released second CD ‘Thunder Gold’ is about the gold mines of America featuring 12 songs of the Old West, and features beautiful vocals, haunting lyrics and glittering guitars.

KATIE MALCO
Scottish, London-based singer songwriter Katie Malco has a penchant for melodic and catchy pop/indie/folk music, counting Bon Iver, Jenny Lewis, Andrew Bird, and Joni Mitchell amongst her many influences. Enjoying a successful release of her debut EP ‘Four Goodbyes’, Katie has been hailed as 'A spine-chillingly beautiful songwriter blessed with intimate honey-drenched vocals accompanied by swells of indie folk guitar, breaking your heart with a verse and then mending it by the chorus.'

Dark and demented roots-flavoured avant rock, tour their third album 'JACKKNIFED & SLAUGHTERED ' described as 'fine grunge-pop, borne by basslines borrowed from Joy Division, while the epic title track builds adroitly from Birthday Party blues into a thing of thunderous ferocity’ by UNCUT magazine.
'Tenebrous Liar make a stand for mavericks everywhere. The rotating members, centred around mouthpiece Steve Gullick, tailor their exquisite avant-garde Americana to suit the occasion, with a living music that fills every corner of the room' - NME

Currently in the studio putting the finishing touches to the follow up to their massively-acclaimed debut 'Little Death' (Stolen Recordings), Pete and The Pirates pop out for a Friday night of fun.
These bright, young commanders of a brand of unique Englishness blend smooth edged punk and pop to produce music which is sweet, raw, joyous, melancholic, raucous and tender. The Pirates idiosyncratic and endearing song writing puts them somewhere between the Flying Nun band Tall Dwarfs and the wistful reflection of On The Beach-era Neil Young.

'Perfect pop without the pretence' NME 8/10

between Rod Stewart circa the Faces and an early Bob Dylan.

FRANZ NICOLAY (Brooklyn, NY)
That mustachioed man-about-town you've seen with The Hold Steady, World/Inferno Friendship Society, Anti-Social Music, and more, steps up to the spotlight and salutes.
'Yes, Nicolay is a man of distinctive appearance - half-cocked beret, Dali moustache, occasional goatee - and his first solo album exudes a suitably exuberant self-confidence. Few side projects have as much character as the witty and full-hearted Major General.' UNCUT
'Eclectic and ambitious but unshowy, Major General is about as satisfying as any solo effort from a member of an established band still killing it themselves as I can think of...Major General hits some massive highs and nary a single crushing low. Nicolay's skill at playing punk sage on one song and slightly troubled troubadour on the next is really something special.' - Pitchfork
'Recasting the windswept folk artist as someone with piratical swagger, he comes over like Nick Cave leading an American Pogues, and every see-saw rhythm is shot through with a potent, whisky-drenched drama. In other words, the man's a ham, but a terrific one.' - Q Magazine

New project from ex-Fanfarlo guitarist Mark West that employs concertina, melodica and glockenspeil alongside guitar, bass and drums to sculpt of slow-burning folk-pop gems.
'It’s hard not to like The Lost Cavalry, especially if you enjoy a little accordion, maybe some ukulele and the odd catchy whimsical lyric in your indie tune' Uppror Magazine

HELIOPAUSE (Belfast)
The music and lyrics of Heliopause reflect the ebb and flow of the tides, as layer upon layer combines to make a perfect sound forever.
The Irish press has compared Heliopause to the likes of American Analog Set and Mice Parade and the trio have entertained audiences across Ireland, supporting Wintersleep, Frightened Rabbit, Uzi & Ari, Quasi and Jeffrey Lewis. Fri 19thSTILL BELIEVE
*Petit Vodo
*Billy Vincent
*Rivers Presley Set
*The Henry Brothers
STILL BELIEVE - ever-popular monthly clubnight of psyche, folk and fun hosted by Danny & The Champions of the World.
This month however, Danny is away in Texas so we'll have some special guests curating the night. More about who that is, and the others acts they are picking to play will be posted here soon.

PETIT VODO (France)
Petit Vodo, one man band, has been making noise for over a decade, simultaneously playing drums, guitar, harmonica and vocals as well as adding dashes of radio interference and triggering samples when playing live.
On stage Petit Vodo falls somewhere between the eclectic rule-breaking of Beck Hanson, the trash-rock asthetic of Hasil Adkins and the frantic delivery of Jon Spencer. He counts old time blues men (Slim Harpo, Skip James, Dan Pickett, Lighting Hopkins) and current blues (G-Love, Beck, Morphine) as influences, and at the same time draws on the rock 'n roll experimantalism of Doo Rag, 20 Miles and The Lonesome Organist.
Renowned in his native France, he's also picked up a solid UK following due to previous tours with Gallon Drunk and Penthouse as well as support from the likes of Steve Lamacq, NME and Kerrang!
A must-see-to-be-believed act.
www.myspace.com/petitvodo

BILLY VINCENT
Outlaw folk rock quintet with a cinematic quality set midway between old school spaghetti and Cormac McCarthyesque gore.
Chanelling the spirit of Strummer through the likes of Cohen & Cave, and taking influence from the very streets they inhabit to dreams of far off lands, Billy Vincent bring tales of love, lust, ambition & murder. Dark as they are bright, grand & restrained in equal measure, it's a heady & gripping cocktail they christen 'Dirty Folk'.
'An extremely impressive debut single…a brilliantly unique piece of folky pop…. pure indie pop joy…they will find themselves on everyone’s Ipods in 2010.' - Altsounds
www.myspace.com/billyvincent

THE RIVERS PRESLEY SET
Hailing from Birmingham, England (as opposed to their spiritual home of Alabama) and channeling bluesmen infinitely older than his years, Rivers Presley's music echoes the demons of Son House & Model T Ford if they were bought up on a diet of Mark Lanegan and The Black Keys.
Joined on stage by drummer Thomas Henry their live presence switches between swollen slide guitar licks and pin drop silences which leave crowds staggered. Recent devotees Black Diamond Heavies, after catching The Rivers Presley Set live on a trip to the UK, were so impressed that they asked the guys to join them on the US leg of their tour.
The band are all set to release their debut album 'The Death Of Elegance' this year and are currently playing a string of dates around the UK.

THE TUNICS
Celebrated Croydon 3-piece, signed to Manta Ray Music. Their sound is their own, so the inevitable comparisons that try to label them lie all over the rock spectrum from Oasis to The Reverend to Wombats to The Libertines, but are unable to pin them down. But on one thing all agree: the sound is thrilling.

JOSE VANDERS
....was quietly producing Regina Spektor-influenced piano-pop gold nuggets in her bedroom, before celebrity blogger Perez Hilton recognised her talents and raved about her in his blog. Since then, nineteen-year-old Vanders has released a succession of sold-out EPs, recorded a Radio 1 session for Rob Da Bank, racked up well over one million plays on MySpace and recently been picked up by the managers of chart sensations The Feeling.
www.myspace.com/vandersmusic

LUKE LEIGHFIELD
... has released three albums in the past four years, entered the top five of the UK indie singles chart, played over 500 shows in twelve countries including Russia and China, recorded a Radio 1 session for Huw Stephens and released a Greatest Hits album in Japan. For this tour, he will be using a four-piece band to bring his Ben Folds-inspired piano pop to life.

SAM LITTLE (formerly Eat.Sleep.Attack)
is about as pop as pop gets. His debut single ‘Fallin' made teen hearts across the world melt upon its release in autumn 2009, thanks to the unlikely fusion of Craig David-esque sultry songwriting with a guitar solo worthy of the finest Bon Jovi song. *Couple
*No Cars
*Junkyard Choir
COUPLE (Malaysia)
..describe their music as 'happy, clappy and not crappy' but, even so, the quality and exuberance of this took us completely by surprise and we booked them in rightaway.
One of the few true blue power pop bands in the region, Couple have pumped out delightfully-entitled albums such as Top Of The Pop (sic) and Teenage Disc Fantastic, both of which were released in the USA and Japan but not over here.
While the band tend to drop kudos to the likes of the The Beach Boys, Big Star, The Who, The Raspberries, The Beat, The Rooks, and Weezer, we can also hear bits of such legendary bands like The Smoking Popes and Superchunk in there.
'… terrifically tuneful and wonderfully endearing…

NO CARS
Food obsessed London based Japanese female lofi scuzzy 50's garage-pop trio. The band share a zany sense of humour making their live shows wholesome and incredible fun. Haruna plays guitar, Sachi plays bass and new member Kyoko plays the drums and they all sing. The band have won many (mostly male) fans with their simple, catchy songs and fetching hats and are destined for ultra fame and more expensive hats.
'No Cars are a bubblegum band, and the audience is chewing....we’re happy to encourage the new Queens of Cute.' - Artrocker

*Stanley Brinks
*Benni Hemm Hemm
*Triple Rosie
STANLEY BRINKS (Stockholm/Paris/NYC/Berlin)
...is the current identity of André Herman Düne, original member of the Herman Düne trio. He has recorded and played shows in Europe, the UK and the US under various other names: Ben Dope, Ben Haschish, Klaus Bong, John Trawling, Lord Stanislas...
He's been championed by the likes of Jeff Lewis (who even wrote a song about how Herman Dune were better when Andre was still in them) and in January of this year he teamed up with much-loved UK indie-folkers The Wave Pictures to release the album 'Stanley Brinks and The Wave Pictures' (Ciao Ketchup).
'ten songs of a quality as high as this represents another pleasant and worthy outing from Brinks in his post Herman Düne world' - DrownedInSound
www.myspace.com/therealstanleybrinks

BENNI HEMM HEMM (Reykjavik/Edinburgh)
...is the band of Benedikt H. Hermannsson. He writes the band´s songs and produces the band´s recordings. Benni Hemm Hemm is an organism that is hard to explain. Its members are in total around 300. At shows the size of the band is usually somewhere from 3 to 40 (we'll be having the tour-friendly trio version tonight - brass and electricity included!)
New trumpet-laced EP 'Retaliate' is out in April on Kimi Records

majestic and playful as this.'

SHOT BY BOTH SIDES
'Essentially an evil indie disco…a darn sight darker than most' - Guardian Guide
www.myspace.com/shotbybothsidesclub

Shot By Both Sides – London's premier purveyors of arcane, outlandish and fantastical musical delights - have risen from the grave. This reanimated corpse shambles into life once more, on Friday 26th March, at the ever-splendid Brixton Windmill.
Expect a thrilling soundtrack of wonky psych, gritty '60s garage, gnarled folk, freakout jazz, C86 indie and Northern Soul, poetry, stories, free ‘zines, various handouts, literature/tape exchange, some peculiar visual treats, cakes, a few out-of-the-hat surprises and some sensational live sets from the following …
.

THE HELMHOLTZ RESONATORS
A fantastically madcap group of sonic scientists, Helmholtz Resonators' brand of retro-futurism, psychedelic whimsy and electronic organ grinding is a stunning spectacle. Taking their moniker from Hermann von Helmholtz's device, expect oscillators, stylophones and other extraordinary contraptions as they tackle their debut album, 'The Crystal Submarine'.
'An electronic riot from start to finish. The Crystal Submarine is sure to leave you with a tune in your head and a smile on your face. 5/5' - Artrocker Magazine
HR take us to a mystical place where lab coats and velvet capes collide! Think Mangus Pike meets Keith Emerson! Very clever, yet equally stupid! I love 'em!'- Mark Riley (BBC 6 Music)
'…Imagine a freaky electro jazz kraut boogie woven out of the grooves of Tubeway Army's 'Replicas' by those impish mites Add N to X. Has to be heard to be believed - I'm thinking we need more and sharpish' - Losingtoday
'Mad as a box of frogs, and we love them dearly for this fact…our favourite album of the year' - Maps Magazine
www.myspace.com/thehelmholtzresonators

SPEAK & THE SPELLS
Fresh from releasing their debut 7-inch in conjunction with God Don't Like It, Speak & The Spells unleash their totally wired, gloriously shambolic live set at Shot By Both Sides. A riot of '60s Addams Family garage punk and reverb-heavy sinister surf, this will be deliciously deranged.
'A kind of magic' - Loud & Quiet Magazine
'The Fly is hooked and a little bit in love' - The Fly
'Something that John Peel would definitely play - XFM
They possess a freshness that sets them apart from the retro brigade and they offer an edge of authentic power that is utterly lacking in about 90%-plus, of the current crop of sleek and satisfied chart pop - Alt Sounds
www.myspace.com/speakandthespells

FILTHY BOY
Young Peckham upstarts let loose their ostentatious and striking dram-rock. With elements of Nick Cave's fire-and-brimstone preaching and gritty, hot-blooded melodies, Filthy Boy pay no mind to anaemic waif-indie; catch them now.

THE 5 YEARS PARTY...celebrates the London indie scene of 2004/5, a time when people were buying records, ramming out gigs and delighting in seeing the likes of Art Brut, The Rakes and Long Blondes climb up the charts.
Today is a mix of bands reforming for the occasion and others still pursuing the DIY spirit.
And there'll be some VERY SPECIAL GUESTS on the day!

THE FADES
Regrouped for parties and special occasions only these days, The Fades punk-flavoured rock'n'roll has provided the soundtrack to many sweaty nights in London, but they're back and more pumped up than ever before!
'They seem to have melded what is a very old school sound to the new school of punk-garage, and this is what gives them the edge' - XFM
www.myspace.com/thefades

VIDEO CLUB
Electro-powerpop-kraut faves of a few years ago.
www.myspace.com/thevideoclub

CICCONE
...were the original kings of indie DIY. Ciccone died on the 13th June 2007 at the Astoria, London Town.
Before that they released an album, various no-budget videos, supported Art Brut and the like and scooped airplay and praise from everyone from Steve Lamacq and Kerrang! to Chris Moyles.
'In Rebekah Delgado, they possess a 24-carat goddess of infectious vocal melody and have-your-eye-out lyrical phrasing

BIDGIE REEF & THE GAS
Back in the day Bidgie were a mass-arnked band who could outrock any kid bands that were unfortunate enough to be on the same bill. Nowadays they slimmed down to a piano and vox duo purveying loungey bitterness. And, by the way, the singer is Roger Winslet, Kate's dad.

CHRIS BROKAW (Cambridge, Massachusetts)
....is one of the hardest working musicians in America; a great guitarist, blessed with a deep soulful songwriting skill and dry smokey voice.
He’s over here to promote his latest album “The Angel’s Message To Me” (Damnably Records), a collaboration with Karate’s Geoff Farina that brings their unique picking style to a collection of pre-WW2 country-blues-folk songs
Chris was a founding member of Codeine; the band that started the Slowcore scene in the late '80s, then he formed Come with Thalia Zedek, and now drums in The New Year , plays guitar for Thurston Moore and Evan Dando and with a wealth of other high achieving acts. Chris Brokaw is a rare humble genius and one of the finest solo artists of our times.
’One of the best performers in the country’ Time Out New York
’Ravaged but beautiful beyond belief, reflecting both the dark, blues-strung grief of Come, and the lean-lined, horizon-fixed heft of Codeine.’ - Time Out London
’Brokaw proves himself as an intriguing, highly singular lyricist and vocalist as well as the most mesmerising indie guitarist since The Durutti Column's Vini Reilly.” (4/5 Stars) London Evening Standard

Mon 29thWindmill Brixton presents:
*FREE ENERGY
*Singing Adams
*Eelectricity & Lust
FREE ENERGY (Phialdelphia, PA)
Newly signed to DFA Records and produced by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, FREE ENERGY rose out of the ashes of much-loved Minneapolis slacker indie band Hockey Night. The result of these forces merging is a one tight hi-fi band with head-throbbing bass lines, epic guitar solos and a nod to classic artists like the Allman Brothers, Thin Lizzy and, oh yes, T Rex, as well as keeping some indie playfulness on tap.
FREE ENERGY are a band to sweep away the cobwebs of the 'noughties and a pointer toward the exciting new sounds of the teen decade with the message of 'Have a Good Time, All Of The Time', evoked on their debut album 'Stuck On Nothing'. It's been getting rave reviews in the US and earned them the accolade of SPIN magazine's #1 band to watch out for in 2010 (www.spin.com/node/57826).
'a total car radio summer jam, a chugging singalong that could make a hell of a sitcom theme (a good thing!).' - Pitchfork
'hang on... this is on DFA? It'd seem the NYC kings of cool are flip-reversing their turntables for guitars and, frankly, about a minute and a half into this video you'll start smiling and understand why.' Drownedinsound

STAGECOACH
Scuzzy pop on record and rawkus fun live. Superb tunesmithery from the depths of Surrey. Probably the loudest electro acoustic band in the world.
www.myspace.com/stagecoachuk

HOLD YOUR HORSE IS
..take a heavy influence from 90's American Indie and 00's British Post-Hardcore. Their unusual name is taken from the title of a seminal album by 2 piece Californian noise merchants Hella; whom they don't sound much like.
Completing their line up in 2008, they have been played on Radio 1 by Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens, had numerous plays on 6Music and XFM by Tom Robinson and John Kennedy respectively and have featured on compilations for indie labels such as ‘Big Scary Monsters’ and ‘Stressed Sumo Records’.
Included in several 'ones to watch' list for 2010, these guys are destructive mayhem at it's finest.
