*Castanets
*Artur Dyjecinski
*Lazarus
CASTANETS (San Diego, CA)
Rare full band show touring the amazing new album 'Texas Rose, The Thaw, and The Beasts'. Its the fifth (and best) for Asthmatic Kitty, and sees Castanets bossman Ray Raposa dropping a pop record on us and, at the same time, keeping it proper with one foot in a shimmering puddle of strangeness and experimentation; an oscillating, dissolving reverie of country and folk that goes from clattering and dark to big and triumphant then right back to noise again.

*Beth Jeans Houghton

*Ivan Ink + Pen
A TIME OUT CRITiC'S CHOICE. Time Out says:
Nineteen-year-old Geordie folk princess Houghton - who's hobnobbed with the likes of John Martyn, Vetiver, Joanna Newsom and Bon Iver and has started an A&R bidding war - demonstrates why she's been described as the missing link between Gwen Stefani and Vashti Bunyan. Here, she plays from her recent five-track EP, 'Hot Toast Vol I', which was produced by Tunng's Mike Lindsay.

BETH JEANS HOUGHTON (Newcastle-upon-Tyne)
Its a pleasure to present one of the success stories of this summer's festival season and a name we know you'll hear much, much more of in 2010.
Still just 19 years old, she has supported Tunng and Tinariwen on tour, collaborated with Vetiver, John Martyn, Bon Iver, Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom, and recorded the Golden/Nightswimmer single with Adem.
Tonight, BJH will be playing with a full band in a great bill of folk and experimentation.
'Mesmirising Psyche Folk' - The Independant
'Glam Folk Genius, A Legend in the Making'- NME
she could easily be dismissed as just another kooky songstress were it not for the quality of her music and voice, a light, airy instrument capable of conveying delight, astonishment and sorrow, often in a single song. The Guardian

ANIMAL HOSPITAL (Boston, MA)
...is Kevin Micka's one-man musical recording/performance entity. Formed at the tail-end of Micka's time with Boston band The Common Cold, Animal Hospital slowly began to take on a life of its own in 2004. Since then Animal Hospital's albums and live shows have won followers from all corners of the music world, earning himself spots on tours with bands as diverse as Beirut , Neptune, and the tech-grind metal group The Great Redneck Hope.
During performances, Micka buries himself in a pile of electronics-shelves of effects, mixing consoles, amps and delay units-while patiently constructing a layered nest of loops consisting of live drum beats, guitar chords, scrapes, chucks, chimes, and melodies resulting in anything from more conventional songs to meticulously crafted ambient movements on to full on improvisation.
Memory is pretty much the coolest experimental record I have heard, probably since that Fun Years record. Micka is a multi-instrumentalist of the highest quality and in the years proceeding Memory has honed his skills in a live setting by playing and looping his instruments into effervescent concoctions that sound like the work produced by a four piece band (and a talented one at that) Forest Gospel

+ more
Now onto it's 14th outing, Backstreets is a semi-regular night of music featuring some of London's best bands and DJs spinning classics. Great music to get drunk to on a Friday night!

FOUR DEAD IN OHIO (London)
Managed by the good people at Fierce Panda, FDIO have already toured with the Duke Spirit, the Raveonettes, Ladytron and the Black Angels, as well as securing a spot at Hyde Park supporting Neil Young.
Influenced by the likes of BRMC and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, psychadelic guitars clash with pounding drums to produce a sonic onslaught that won’t be forgotten quickly.
‘Screaming guitars fuse with epic walls of sounds’ - NME
www.myspace.com/fourdeadinohioband

BLACK DANIEL (London)
Windmill live favourites and with a growing legion of bizarre dancers and celebrity fans (Eddie Argos of Art Brut, Lauren Laverne, Colin Murray), Black Daniel have played th scummiest clubs in New York as well as toured with Kasabian and Bryan Adams (yes you read that right). This is electro-scuzz-garage-rock with dirty bass lines that will get you dancing.
‘My new favourite band’– Eddie Argos (Art Brut)
‘Like a Cross between The Velvet Underground & The Pogues’ – Colin Murray

ALPHABET BACKWARDS (Oxford)
Recently signed to Kittiwake Records, Alphabet Backwards have come a long way from their Backstreets debut a couple of years back. This is still the same charming mix of pop to surreal yet intelligent lyrics and they still won’t fail to bring a smile to your face, but this time around they armed with new, bolder, songs.

BELUSHI FEST
I could be dead by 33 Like Bellushi!
John Belushi was a comedy legend his roles in such films as Animal House and the infamous Blues Brothers film marked that. He sadly passed at 33… Timothy C Holehouse is turning 33 at the start of November (although has no intention of passing over to the other side… but to pay tribute to his hero and have a really rather awesome Birthday is holding an all day event at the Windmill in Brixton. Choosing some of his favorite UK acts the former Among The Missing and Soon The Darkness frontman who is now a solo entity in his own right curates a day of some of the finest and heaviest acts within the UK currently.
So here's the orders of the day...the first band (Crumbling Ghost are on at 2.30pm and from then it's a whirlwind of noise. Invasion headline at about 11pm.

INVASION (London)
Psych grooves of sonic wizardry.
London's Invasion are gaining much attention currently and with their Debut album having just arrived their stars are in ascendancy… ex Do Me Bad Things singer's soulful vocals teamed up with two fine sonic sculptors who have mixed psychedelic rock with thrash and come up with something really rather marvelous! Catch em now before they take off into space!
www.myspace.com/invasion

TIMOTHY C HOLEHOUSE (London)
Dark epic movements.
The Birthday man himself. Playing tonight with Leeds band Electric Mud Generator backing him up. After his first album in this guise selling out in two weeks on Dead Pilot records he has completed and will soon see the release of his 2nd album ‘In Search of the Binarystar’. Think long drawn soundscaped material rising and falling like Galicia's creeping slowly to a dramatic stunning conclusion.
www.myspace.com/timothycholehouse

ELECTRIC MUD GENERATOR (Leeds)
Progressive folk.
On Totally Prog records and somewhere between mystical folk and progressive rocks finest sounds. Three of the most amazing musicians interweaving thier finely crafted skills to make something truly wonderful.
www.myspace.com/electricmudgenerator

END OF LEVEL BOSS (London/Hampshire)
Groove laden psych stoner rock.
Ex Hangnail Harry and his band have made quite a fantastic niche for themselves… Games console progressive rock and Harry's small stature but massive voice will blow you away. On Exile on Mainstream records they have released some fine records over the last few years, blown many bigger bands off the stage and generally ruled!
www.myspace.com/endoflevelboss

ALABASTER SUNS (London)
Metal riffs; ex-Capricorns.
The demise of the Capricorns, one of the best UK bands for a long time, was a sad affair. But, worry not, Alabaster Suns will more than make up for that. Nathan and Kev have teamed up with ex Frightener bassist Anthony Dearlove and produced something special. In no way are they living in the shadows of the old band, forging a new more heavy and technical path. With Kev's smattering of brutal vocal delivery they are stripped down and ready for action.
www.myspace.com/alabastersuns

CRUMBLING GHOST (London)
Folk prog doom.
This could be a super group of sorts featuring ex Fanta Plastic, Among the Missing, Huge Baby and current Koresh and Small Gang members. They have played as part of Damo Suzuki's improv group and some very good initial shows. Sounding like a progressive doom band who have been listening to way to much Fairport Convention (in a good way that is), this new band deliver the psychedelic goods.
www.myspace.com/crumblingghost

YOU'RE SMILING NOW BUT WELL ALL TURNS INTO DEMONS (Portsmouth)
Wizards in a blizzard.
Portsmouth's finest bringers of doom soaked psych… think what it would have been like if Rocky Erikson had been in the Melvins. And your not even half way there.
www.myspace.com/thedemons

THE DEATH OF HER MONEY (Newport, Wales)
Metal doom soaked riffs.
From Wales these riff heavy fellas have toured the UK and their records on Rat Patrol have won them many fans. This is the first time in a while they have played the capital.
www.myspace.com/thedeathofhermoney

HITCHER (Edinburgh)
Slow building noise.
Imagine walking the streets of Edinburgh while in the shadows something lurks that you know at any point will jump out at you. This is Hitcher… slow building songs that explode into a frenzy of riffs and brutal vocals. www.myspace.com/hitchermusic

ATTACK! VIPERS! (Portsmouth)
Hard fast and heavy as hell!
The best UK hardcore band! Fact! Heavy and manic basically mind blowing hardcore played with the style and passion it should be played. Their debut album made massive waves in the scene and their currently working on a follow up after several split releases and constant touring.
www.myspace.comattackvipers

FLATLANDS (Sheffield/Lincoln)
Solid dynamic sonics.
With a vast amount of touring and their second album under their belt, Sheffield's Flatlands have very much built their own sound. With influences in early 90's emo to post rock and post metal, they make their unique sound crushing and moving you in equal measures.
www.myspace.com/flatlandstouristboard

TIGER WARSAW (Lincoln)
Mostly instrumental dynamic sculptures.
Tiger Warsaw are more than just another instrumental post metal band. They not only have awesome hooks and riffs that draw you in they rock out rather than just gazing at the stage like a lot of the bands within the genre do. Prepare to have your socks blown off!

SOSL recently released their debut EP 'The Boy’s Got Prospects' on Jellyfish Records and have since enjoyed slots at festivals such as End Of The Road as well as headline slots at The Luminaire and The Social.

Fri 13thSHOT BY BOTH SIDES
*David Cronenberg's Wife
*Gyratory System
*Deathray Trebuchay
*Jamie N Commons
+ DJs God Don't Like It
A TIME OUT CRITIC'S CHOICE night. Time Out says:
'Tom Mayne's Monks- and Fall-inspired, two chord-abusing antifolkers headline with their 'morally outrageous backwoods folk' and play from recent second album, 'Hypnagogues', which reveals new strands of frail ne-country. Head support from Andrew Blick as GS, who proffers lurching, loony and lovely experimental electronica, plus DT ace, energetic mix of punk, samba, surf rock and Balkan gypsy brass.'

----------------------------------

SHOT BY BOTH SIDES – London's premier purveyors of arcane, outlandish and fantastical musical delights - has risen from the grave. After wreaking havoc in Islington’s and New Cross, the night has spent several long months roaming the wilderness, gradually decomposing. However, this reanimated corpse shambles into life once more on (spookily) Friday 13th November in Brixton. This will also be the launch party for David Cronenberg's Wife's new LP, and features one of our finest line-ups so far.
Expect a thrilling soundtrack of wonky psych, gritty '60s garage, gnarled folk, freak-out jazz, girl groups, C86 indie and Northern Soul, poetry, free ‘zines, stories, various handouts, humanoid monstrosities, some peculiar visual treats, cakes, a few out-of-the-hat surprises and some sensational live sets from…
'Essentially an evil indie disco…a darn sight darker than most' – Guardian Guide
www.myspace.com/shotbybothsidesclub

DAVID CRONENBERG'S WIFE
Album Launch Party!
ShotByBothSides are proud to host the album launch party for David Cronenberg's Wife's 2nd LP, the eagerly-awaited 'Hypnagogues'. Achieving something-resembling-legendary status on the UK Antifolk circuit, DCW are a band that deserves to be treasured – and not just for their fabulous moniker. Raw, early-80s, Fall-fried sounds clash with Tom Mayne’s incisive lyrics – which come-on equal-parts sardonic, wide-eyed and bitter. The punk-edged carnival of mental breakdown that you can dance to.
'For sheer scope and lyrical intensity, David Cronenberg's Wife have made one of the best albums of the year' - The Fly
'If Nick Cave isn't unpleasant enough for you these days, this will be a record to treasure' - Time Out
'Sarcastic, sardonic and articulate…I can guarantee once you've heard this, it will stay in your head all day' - Music Week
'Dark and twisted as the name suggests' - London Metro
'These guys are great. They're not ripping anyone off' - Sky Saxon, The Seeds
www.myspace.com/davidcronenbergswife

GYRATORY SYSTEM
The brainchild of Andrew Blick - who has the air of a mad scientist direct from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop - Gyratory System are a distinctly peculiar yet exuberant proposition. Their live set-up, which features ex-members of One More Grain and The Low Edges (some of ShotByBothSides' favourite guests), tackles The Process - burbling electronic mantras with freeform elements, touching on avant-funk and curious music-box experimentalism. Watch out for forthcoming LP 'The Sound-Board Breathes'; a heady, cerebral experience.
'Like a score written by Kraftwerk and Looney Tunes…slightly maddening and totally compelling…this lurchy, lovely thing' - NME
'Liquid ecstasy' - Vice
'If insects suddenly rose up and took over the world this would be their battle anthem amplified by a zillion antennae' - The Guardian
'Ridiculously awesome…This is the music of the Mahavishnu Orchestra captured by a SETI cluster, processed through a myriad of deluded wobbly synthesisers and spat in your grimacing face' – 20 Jazz Funk Greats
www.myspace.com/gyratorysystem

DEATHRAY TREBUCHAY (London)
Demented cossack-crunk from East London 6-piece, whose high-power live shows have been turning audiences around to their trademark 'death-jazz'.
Recently produced by Seb Rochford (Acoustic Ladyland, Polar Bear), their full-on psychedelic gypsy carnival gnabs elements from Mr Bungle, Melt Banana and Shostakovich and pounds them into a relentless pulp. One of the most genuinely rousing happenings you're likely to witness.
'Band of the moment' - Evening Standard
'Ace punk meets samba meets surf' - Time Out
'Death Ray Trebuchay have blended the genres of surf rock, samba, ska, and punk to create a scary other world of dancing skeleton Mexicans who parade about carrying heads on spikes' - Spoonfed
www.myspace.com/deathrayband

JAMIE N COMMONS (London)
Twenty-year old folk troubadour with one of the most astonishing voices around. From the murky depths of South-East London, Commons taps into a rich vein of folk from yesteryear - with touches of Richard Thompson and Nick Drake - but with a zeal and charm all of his own. A grand new presence.

*The European
THE LEFT OUTSIDES (London)
Labelled 'introspective folk, tinged with subtle inventiveness' by Uncut Magazine and 'dreamy folksy psychedelia' by the London Metro, The Left Outsides have an outstanding musical pedigree that includes time in the legendary Comet Gain, The Eighteenth Day of May, Track & Field favourites Saloon and Kicker, and Matthew Sawyer & The Ghosts (also on the bill tonight). Reference points include the ethereal folk-rock of Espers; the droning jangles of the Brian Jonestown Massacre; the gauzy chime of The Clientele; and the innocent psychedelia of early Pink Floyd and solo Syd Barratt. The band have supported the likes of Damon & Naomi among others, and have released their debut album ‘And Colours In Between’ on Transistor Records. Don’t miss.

MADAM
Music for outlaws, cowboys and glamour girls who won’t give up on their idea of perfect love. A fine band of maverick musicians fronted by Sukie Smith.
'… a fragile voiced chanteuse' - Time Out

MATTHEW SAWYER & THE GHOSTS (London)
Mathew Sawyer has been many things in his time. Formerly the drummer for post-punk legends The Television Personalities, he’s an established visual artist, and also leads The Ghosts, whose album ‘Blue Birds Blood’ has been released by Stolen Records, and described by legendary music journo Everett True thus: 'filled with riotous harmonies and self-deprecating observation, wistfulness and the kind of croaky voice that, frankly, makes me go weak at the knees'. Conjuring up the demons unleashed by artists such as Smog, Silver Jews, and Nick Cave at his finest, Sawyer’s lyrics are characterised by his eccentric, bruised view of life, accompanied by reverbed acoustic guitar and his backing band.

THE EUROPEAN (Europe)
The European is the consummate European. The European is a one-man musical genius, a close friend of Enya, and a former member of Piano Magic and the NATO-sponsored Icebreaker International. The European plays a mean Q-Chord (formerly known as an Omnichord - look it up on Wikipedia, suckas). The European blends synth-pop genius, wry lyricism, and avant-garde structures that recall Phillip Glass and Stockhausen at their finest. You will not be disappointed, unless there is something very wrong with you, in which case you will.

DANNY & THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD

Making a name for himself on the London scene, this transplanted Swede offers a broader portfolio of emotions than your average Americana guy, taking in the doom of Cohen, the blues of Johnson, Guthrie's folk and the indie flavour of contemporaries such as Josh Ritter.
This a full band show with some nifty musicians in the ranks and there's a split seven-inch single coming soon on Danny George Wilson's Still Believe label

BLEEDING HEART NARRATIVE
Following the sellout success of their hand-crafted of their debut album 'Tongue Tangled Hair', Oliver Barrett and his ensemble of musicians bring post rock droning and feedbacking into a new decade with a classical slant. Truly enchanting stuff.
A constantly evolving autumnal orchestra of layered pianos, guitars, cellos and restrained noise - Be Prepared
'musically sumptuous and highly arresting' - The Quietus

TEAM BRICK
Last time out we were treated to the voice of Franciscan monk, some saxophone, much distortion and many loops but, really, who knows what the fuck to expect from this hirsute improvisational song-noise merchant from Bristol. As seen on Geoff 'Portishead' Barrow's INVADA label. www.myspace.com/teambrick

BRAINDEAD COLLECTIVE

HERE COMES THE LANDED GENTRY (Derry)
First visit to London for one of the most-talked-about live bands right now in good ole Ireland.
Fusing together old school blues, punk, rockabilly, country and classic rock, they are one sweaty badass rock'rn'roll unit.

JAMIE HUTCHINGS (Australia)
Singer from legendary Oz band Bluebottle Kiss touring his new solo album of Americana with bite.
'A low key ,rewarding late-night listen that proves that there's life after blown amps and feedback.' - ROLLING STONE ****
Onstage 9pm

STEPHEN EVENS (London)
... is a songwriter who has a lot of bitterness and resentment and is channeling it into writing songs to avoid its manifestion into a cancer or abnormal growth.
He has spent most of his days touring here and there with minor indie celebrity. He has for now shunned the tourbus lifestyle for a wander through his own songbook for a change. Armed with a battered guitar, a casiotone and a few pedals Stephen presents songs that mix the likes of Yo La Tengo & Ivor Cutler with broken friendships and human error. Tonight he is joined by Darren Belk, former member of The Wedding Present and founder of the seminal band Beachbuggy.
The songs are beautiful and the words are horrible. I don't know why you don't think that's a good thing.

HEY ROSETTA! (St Johns, Newfoundland)
Acclaimed indie-pop-rock sextet who can sell out venues coast-to-coast in their native Canada for their highly energetic live shows.
And, it's only a matter of time until Europe embraces them and their current Hawksley Workman-produced album 'Into Your Lungs'.
hey Rosetta! don't do things simply nor do they stick to the same tack, but if you must pigeonhole use some of these ones: Arcade Fire, Wilco, Jeff Buckley.
the record is anchored throughout by faultless melody lines, often carried by the surging guitar. It's the tunefulness that will take Hey Rosetta! where they're going. Look out, world.' - THE COAST
www.myspace.com/heyrosetta

BEARHAT (London)
Debut gigs from these four south Londoners. We're astounded at the bittersweet rustic west coast pop sounds, as most of them, until recently, used to be in a much noisier affair.
This reminds us of Rilo Kiley, Frontier Ruckus and other stuff that makes you smile.

Tue 24thWindmill Brixton presents:
*Laura Gibson
*Island Line
*Musee Mecanique
TIME OUT CRITIC'S CHOICE!
Time Out says:
'Portland-based singer-songwriter (who guested on the Dodos' 'Visitor' album) touts the understatedly majestic, quietly bewitching, finger-picked and folkish songcraft of her debut album, 'Beast of Seasons', due out on Dec 14. Plus sunshine-splashed folk rock from London's own Island Line.

LAURA GIBSON (Portland, OR)
Steeped in the fingerpick-guitar rudiments of folk music, inspired by the expressionism of classic jazz vocalists, and finding common ground in the minimalism and ear-taunting of the avant garde, Laura Gibson alights on a branch of the music tree that no one else has found.
This is a rare full band show from the Pacific Northwest songwriter, who has previously toured over here with Alela Diane and has played sessions for Marc Riley on BBC 6Music and XFM's Jon Kennedy. A new album is due for release here on 14 December but no doubt copies will be available at the show.
A new soundtrack for your next long hike through the enchanted forest. - Rolling Stone
'Gently cascading majesty.' - Pitchfork
'Quietly bewitching… an arrestingly understated, accomplished work' - 8/10 Drowned In Sound
'Laura's voice certainly draws you in… when I saw her perform live I was blown away by the simplicity and sophistication in their arrangements, instrumentation and textures. Her phrasing is what is really impressive too which brings me to that meditative space.' - Joey Burns, Calexico

MUSEE MECANIQUE
Elegant, highly textured dreamfolk.
Album out now on Monotreme Records.
'It is [the] ability to viscerally effect an audience that make[s] Musée Mécanique such a powerful, if unusual, folk force. Their shy yet florid debut is tinged with sadness, like a painted carousel sitting empty in winter, mourning for a time that they—or we—never even knew.' - Pitchfork

FOXY SHAZAM (Cincinnati, OH)
New signings to Sire records, and currently on tour with The Sounds, Foxy Shazam sound as crazy as their name and get up to even crazier stage antics. Think Ramones meets the Cramps meets the Gossip meets all sorts!
'a maniacal, carnival-like dynamic that keeps you on your toes throughout the entire album. The group combines pummeling, heavier-than-God riffing and rhythms with more spacious fare, pulling in elements from the entire history of Rock music (from Metal and '50s to Punk and Surf).'
