THE FADES (London)
Covers stars of iPod User magazine and with a split single out on Cranky Girl records with GST cardinals, The Fades keep on partying.
'They seem to have melded what is a very old school sound to the new school of punk-garage, and this is what gives them the edge' - XFM

tapetheradio (London)
With more than a hint of Joy Division and the Cure, Tape the Radio look set to take London by storm this year. They've toured the country with Athlete, sold all copies of their debut EP at Rough Trade, and have been tipped by Steve Lamacq to make it big in 2009. This is bombastic pop-rock of the highest order.

CHAMBER...new club night for bands who offer something a little more unique....

This tawdry affair: London
www.myspace.com/thistawdryaffair

swirling organs menacingly yet seductively creep around the melodramatic twisted pop hooks whilst the male and female vocals regale dramatic stories – haunting pop at its very best.

………………………………………………………………………

The cursors: London
www.myspace.com/thecursorsmusic

erratic female vocals squeal and squeak like a PJ Harvey and Karen O prodigy whilst scratchy guitar rhythms and art punk tumbling bring it all together in a jagged beauty.

“disturbingly good” Organ
…………………………………………………………………………

mammoth: newbury
www.myspace.com/mmthband

ethereal electronics chillingly hum over distorted and haunting vocals as repetitive synthesizers wash over at times with a gentle ease and others with aggressive intent.
'...a joke band...' - a man in Newbury with the worst mullet you have ever seen.
……………………………………………………………………………

Joy-rides: London
www.myspace.com/joyrides

experimental, tribal and demented post punk which incorporates lurching bass line, sinister vocals and full on explosions of noise.

*Wob
*Sailorette
*Lost Note Foundation
 WOB (Brighton)
Ruthlessly independent (he's brought out six albums on tiny labels and just gets on with it), Wob pumps out top shelf powerpop with a rustic edge aided by quite an astonishing vocal ability and a great rhythm section in Kerri Stapleton (bass) and Jon Edon (drums).
This is the release party for his new album 'Trying to Find the Rain'.
'astonishingly bouncy talent machine' - Rock 'n' Reel
www.myspace.com/wobband

SAILORETTE
NME approved Sailorette could be Noah and The Whale without the overwrought angst or they could even be Lightspeed Champion with Joni Mitchell on lead vocals but with a heart deeply rooted in alt-folk. They’re definitely a rising five-piece with ace fiddle playing ! This is their only London date prior to their appearance at 2000 Trees festival in July.
www.myspace.com/sailorettemusic

LOST NOTE FOUNDATION (Melbourne)
...is Joe Ransom, an Aussie currently in London and playing that emotive, intricate and highly tuneful type of indie-pop you associate with his compatriots The Lucksmiths.

*Gregory & The Hawk
*Laura Hocking

*John Houx
GREGORY & THE HAWK (Hudson Valley, NY)
A very rare live band show from Fat Cat signing Meredith Godreau aka Gregory & The Hawk.
Godreau's ability to craft spellbinding, idiosyncratic pop songs, that sound at once suggestive, familiar, and yet very much of themselves had made her a Youtube sensation with lots of fans recording tributes when she was still an unsigned act. Since then , one of our favourite labels has stepped in and with the release of last year's enchanting Moenie & Kitchi, a whole new swarm of fans have come on board.
'this salubrious album is the perfect remedy for a world
saturated with, what is essentially, little more than corporate art. You will find no cleverer, no more beautiful album on shelves or in hard-drives this year. An absolute future classic.'

FOL CHEN (Highland Park, CA)
New electro-art-pop goodness signings to Asthmatic Kitty who describe themselves up as such:
You know that mysterious black object that the creepy family is staring at on the cover of Led Zeppelin's 'Presence' album? Fol Chen sound like that. But we don't sound like Led Zeppelin. (We actually do a little.) Instead, we sound like Prince with Amon Duul II and a children's religious revival, not to mention Hot Chip, Pink Floyd, Gwen Stefani, Pere Ubu, Danielson Famile, Scritti Politti, Boards of Canada, The Blow, and Pulp. (Mostly.) We are using secret powers and the guidance of legendary DJ Donna Donna to combat our nemesis, John Shade. We are cryptic and joyful and we would like you to dance.'

mercurial mixes of MIDI, tumultuous waves of near-gothic synthesizers and post-apocalyptic click-and-whirr percussion, swirling around her multi-tracked vocals, closer in tone and feeling to Kate Bush and Thom Yorke’s solo work than anything coffeehouse-oriented. - EYE Weekly

*Batrider
*To Arms Etc
*Oliver Mann
*Olivia Chaney
BATRIDER (Wellington, NZ)
There's something special about trios that are a joy to watch and Batrider are just about one of the most exciting and inventive that we've seen. Tonight they sweep out the beauties and the demons in equal measure before they embark on a two-month trek of continental Europe.
'As brutal as they are melodic, and as abhorrent as they are beautiful, Batrider presents wonderfully destructive images, backed by guitars that will slice at your heart, then turn around and pummel the f8ck out of it.' Drum Media (Sydney)
www.myspace.com/batrider

TO ARMS ETC (London via Melbourne)
Taking their name from a reggae album by, um, Serge Gainsbourg, the To Arms Etc quintet are unsurprisingly people who like to mix things up, and indeed the recently-released 'Corner Games' (Bronze Rat Records) is a fine melting pot of chamber pop, psych, bluesy melodrama and piano-led starkness.
'welding smart lyrice to sonic adventure' - UNCUT ****
www.myspace.com/toarmsetc

OLIVER MANN (Australia)
... is by trade a professional opera singer (he sings with the Victorian Opera, based in Melbourne) but has also released two albums of very individual and lovely folk pop. Think Tindersticks with a bit of Antony & The Johnsons, but much warmer. His new album 'The Possum Wakes At Night' is quite brilliant, and with is pro training you just know he can absolutely kick it live.

*John Bull & The Bandits
ORA COGAN (Vancouver, BC
Darling of the independent music scene in Vancouver, Ora has had a helping hand from none other than The Be Good Tanyas who brought her on tour and helped make her debut album, the acclaimed ‘Tatter’.
Often compared to artists such as Karen Dalton and Devendra Banhart, she has shared stages with the likes of Tanya Tagaq and Vashti Bunyan while immersing herself in the festival circuit in both North America and Europe.
’Wonderously accomplished, Miss Cogan is blessed with a beautiful sultry, jazzy and bluesy voice and wraps her songs with simple but highly effective arrangements. It’s a lovely little 7 tracker that brings to mind Rickie Lee Jones, Joanna Newsom and Jolie Holland.’ - Rough Trade Shops
’Delicate guitar and a voice that could melt butter combine to give an album that sounds like it was recorded in the middle of a cornfield.’ - Americana UK
www.oracogan.com

LAURA VICTORIA (Brixton)
Pop meets trad folk via a voice and a cello.
Intense, edgy, light hearted, melodramatic and honest songs brought to life by unusual cello playing that veers between moving melancholy airs, punchy rock riffing and slap bass. Songs tell of love affairs, shipwrecks, imaginary worlds, (and cups of tea).
A recently arrived resident of south London, Laura has played many world/folk music festivals throughout Europe attracting attention for both her pop sensibilities and unique cello playing.

*12 Stone Toddler

*The Spiral
!2 STONE TODDLER (Brighton)
Very rare London club show for these extraordinary seaside band who have built up a crazed loya following over the past couple of years.
'Having bagged themselves what may prove to be the last great name for a band, 12 Stone Toddler can get on with their one-band assault on that most neglected of genres, that of lounge metal. Simultaneously magnificently louche and uncomplicatedly ROCK, Candles On The Cake takes a wry song about our culture's obsession with age or the lack thereof, and makes it sound so sleazy that it would be right at home underpinning the latest carnal exertions of Jenna Jameson. She's a porn star, as if you didn't know, and 12 Stone Toddler may end up dating her if they continue on their fine trajectory.' PETE CASHMORE - THE GUARDIAN

SHONEN KNIFE (Osaka)
Legendary and influential, this all-female pop-punk trio started life apparently way back in 1981 but it was not until the likes of Somic Youth and Nirvana started championing heavily in the early 90s that they achieved recognition in the west.
Writing happy songs about creature comforts such as cookies, sushi, jelly beans, hot chocolate and banana chips, they mix up 60s girlgroup sounds with a love of The Ramones.
It's been well over a decade since they hit Europe though throughout that time they have kept recording with their cult status fully intact.
They've a brand new album out called 'Super Group' and it sounds just as god as they always did - if you possess a classic pop sound there's no need to mess around with it!

Food obsessed London based Japanese female lofi scuzzy 50's garage-pop trio. The band share a zany sense of humour making their live shows wholesome and incredible fun. Thu 25thWindmill Brixton presents:
*PIANO MAGIC
*Eva Eden
*Andy HankDog
PIANO MAGIC (London)
From its conception as a bedroom-studio hobby for Glen Johnson in summer 1996, Piano Magic's trajectory has never been textbook - random at best. Originally, a self-confessed revolving door operation - musicians arriving, contributing and leaving as they pleased - they harvested a catalogue of varied singles, EPs and two albums by 1998. This conveyor-belt membership also resulted in a plethora of sonic stylings, from smallbeat Kraftwerkian Meccano Pop to breathless, ethereal, multi-layered melancholy.
Only in this millennium have Piano Magic resemble anything like a conventional format group though two-thirds of their membership is French and their label is based in Spain, and although they've been able to get such highbrow figures as Vashti Bunyan, Alan Sparhawk (Low), Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins) and John Grant (The Czars) to guest on their albums, the band still remain more popular on the continent than in their homebase. That's London's loss, but tonight it's Brixton;s gain when Piano Magic play a rare 90-minute set.

With Hook and The Twin, Pope Joan and Black Daniel capable of sonically assaulting the ears.. plus support from exciting indie up starters Islington Boys Club, alongside a slice of leftfield leaning folkness from The Peryls and a full DJ line up… It’s not Glasto, but it’ll certainly do!

HOOK AND THE TWIN
With their debut single Race For The Bone becoming the sublime indie hit of the year, this London duo have fast propelled themselves as one the UK’s most original and exciting buzz bands right now. Having featured heavily on the Radio 1 evening playlists, they’ve just completed their first Radio 1 session at Maida Vale for Rob da Bank. With this kind of support it’s hard to see how they won’t fail to go far.

Brighton boys Pope Joan are a colourful explosion of post punk adorned, effects laden guitar lines, quirky synth noises, elasticated bass lines - fusing the gap between avant-garde art punk and melodic pop pleasantries. With recent rave reviews appearing in the NME & Artrocker and more, Pope Joan have gone from strength to strength to establish themselves as the current must see Brighton band.

ACTION BEAT
In their own words, 'Action Beat are an improv noise/no-wave band which is often made up of musicians who are available to play the gig on any particular date. We sound quite like early sonic youth, Glenn Branca, Swans and Rhys Chatham. We normally have at least 4 guitarists, a bassist and between 1 and 4 drummers.' HELL. YES.
www.myspace.com/actionbeat

ALAN MX
Smalltown America described their new signing as a 'bedroom electro-pop wonderkid'. His lo-fi laptop funk is something to behold, and a show that once seen is never forgotten.

TIM TEN YEN
The Singing Salaryman (and his Sinister Cat) return to play songs from his first album, Everything Beautiful Reminds Me Of You. Guaranteed to get everyone dancing and singing along.

A SCHOLAR AND A PHYSICIAN
Having finally released their own single this year, A Scholar & A Physician bring what The Stool Pigeon described as 'sweetly comedic electro-indie that falls somewhere between Jeffrey Lewis and a riot in Dixons.' to the Zonino party.
www.myspace.com/ascholarandaphysician

PAGAN WANDERER LU
With this show, Pagan Wanderer Lu becomes the first act to properly play Zonino twice. Playing songs from his new album 'Fight My Battles For Me', Mr Lu's one-man 'indietronica' is truly engrossing. We're honoured to have him back.

THEIR HEARTS WERE FULL OF SPRING
Subbacultcha.com described the band as 'a joyous cacophony of guitars, glockenspiels, tambourines and kitchen sinks ... indie-pop is rarely this fresh, beautiful and heartfelt.' They're not too far off the truth.
www.myspace.com/theirheartswerefullofspring

THE HYSTERICAL INJURY
Bath's The Hysterical Injury use drums and bass to create an almighty racket that they say 'may or may not' sound like bands they like including Marnie Stern, Lightning Bolt, Swell Maps and Sonic Youth. You can decide for yourself.

PENNINES
Straight out of Norwich, (despite the name), Pennines have been compared to bands like Owls and Don Caballero, playing as they do wonderfully tight stop-start technical guitar wizardry. It promises to be a great start to the day.

JONQUIL (Oxford)
Super eclectic sextet and one of the best bands you'll see right now. Brainfood + tunes = win.
This is a masterclass in how to purvey experimentalism without foregoing accessibility, and for that alone, Jonquil need to become huge - Clash

PHANTOM THEORY (Oxford)
..are currently making a buzz across the UK with their electrifying and quite frankly mystifying live shows. Not mystifying in the Paul Daniels sense but in the sense of how just two people can make such a racket.

Mon 29thTHE SHIFTY DISCO TOUR
*The Race
*King Of Spain
*My Device
*Anton Barbeau
Pioneering Oxford based independent label, Shifty Disco is set to have some fun this summer as its artists embark on a Come Play With Me Tour!

KING OF SPAIN (South London)
..released their debut album ‘Battleships and Aeroplanes’ earlier this year. The album, which is full of gloriously catch indie-folk tunes, sea shanties and lullabies has received the following praise:
'Welcome King of Spain with open arms. Reeking of Hefner and The Go-Betweens, this album stands as a homage to a great school of underground indie… awesome’ – NME
‘These four blokes from South London have captured that raw Britishness of a Libertines record better than twenty other bands who were trying harder could do’ - Bearded
www.myspace.com/kingofspainmusic

MY DEVICE
Following the release of the album ‘Jumbo Fiasco’ at the end of 2007, My Device have spent the last 18 months dividing their time between the studio and trips to New York, where they are building themselves quite a fan base. Here’s what the press said about ‘Jumbo Fiasco’:
'Their second album hurtles through 14 relentlessly intricate songs in 35 minutes, evoking classic art-pop from early Eno, The Fall and XTC through to current post-punkers The Futureheads and The Young Knives, dispatched with the intensity of hardcore punk' - Q
'My Device offer 14 tracks of completely insane and extremely fun post punk... they'll definitely be a hit on the dance floor of every indie disco' - Drowned In sound
'Sounds a bit like Modest Mouse and Les Savy Fav having a penknife fight whiles Wires On Fire watch on. This is obviously brilliant' - Artrocker
‘A must-see act’ - Notion
www.myspace.com/mydevice

ANTON BARBEAU (Cambridge via California)
In recent years Anton Barbeau has been quietly but quickly building a global fan base with his esoteric and highly-original brand of psychedelic power-pop, his mind-bending stage show and his auto-neurotic humour. His 5th album ‘The Automatic Door’ was released in the Summer of 2007.
‘Anton Barbeau represents the Sacramento chapter of that nameless coterie of enduringly reliable, acid-tinged singer-songwriters’ – The Sunday Times
'Barbeau's beaming, carefree melodies belie a compendium of fears and diseases - wherein suffragettes, lepers and beauty queens co-exist in balmy, barmy harmony with billy goats, big business and psychic twins.' - Plan B
'This man sure arrived in the wrong decade and has been showing the world this since the late '80s, but his dedicated followers are happy he's here now, myself included' - Kruger Magazine
