THE KINGSIZE FIVE (London)
The Kingsize Five are one of the most refreshing bands in London at the moment. They bring 1920s good time swing up to date with a healthy dose of Rock n Roll. You’re feet wont know what’s hit them.
'Amazing: I predict this will spread through the country like a virus' - Shaun Keaveney, BBC 6 Music Breakfast Show

*The Mekons
*De Rosa
*Laura Hocking
SORRY,..there will be NO tickets on the door for this one.

THE MEKONS (Chicago/New York/London)
One of only two UK dates!!!
The Mekons are more than a band and more than a bunch of cracking musicians who play in various other bands. Throughout their history they have worked collaboratively and collectively with everything credited to the band, never to individuals. Their mind boggling output consistently blurs the lines between high art and low and has included exhibitions in the UK and US, a deranged musical recorded and staged with Kathy Acker and several books including the unique 'Mekons United' surely the best tome ever published by, or about, a band. And, without ever being a comedy act, they are also very very funny to boot.
'Here’s to a band who have it all: tunes, creativity, humour, politics, brains, reliability, sex appeal.... as their musicianship has deepened they have only made the old stuff sound better.' - Village Voice.
www.myspace.com/mekons

DE ROSA (Glasgow)
'MUSIC is a very serious business when done by De Rosa – a band who seem to approach their task – eyes lowered, heads nodding – with all the sober determination of a team of social workers.
It's a winning formula (honest) that's already seen the Bellshill quintet produce one classic Scottish debut album – 2006's Mend (its follow-up, Prevention, is due in March and is every bit as good) – and roughly help fill the gap left at their record label, Chemikal Underground, since the demise of Arab Strap and Aereogramme, by combining a little of the former band's kitchen-sink grimness with some the latter's alt-rock muscle...'

COTTONMOUTH ROCKS
are a boy/ girl two piece rock band who play loud guitars with lo-fi electronics and hypnotic, tribal percussion, formed through themes of big american cars, werewolves, voodoo, deserts, forests, storms and cheap motels; the sound is of romance, running away , magic and sleaze. an unhinged road movie of disturbing excess and dark supernatural narrative.
Cottonmouth Rocks don't so much fuse rock and dance as understand that both come from the same place. The slow, sleazy 'Witch Doctor' has slo-mo Bo Diddley blues vibes and a relentless head-nod groove.' - MIXMAG

4 OR 5 MAGICIANS (Brighton)
Touted as one of the best up-and-coming on the South coast, Brighton’s 4 or 5 Magicians have been described as lofi indie rock with pop sensibilities. Their releases on the This Is Fake DIY have been received with praise from various radio one DJs including Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq, who gave thema single of the week.
Brighton five-piece 4 or 5 Magicians are more exciting than the prospect of Paul Daniels actually fulfilling his long-running promise to leave the country under a Labour regime. With lyrics so slick they make Alex Turner sound like a spluttering old colonel struggling with a cream bun and equal parts lo-fi bedroom fuzz and glorious art-pop melody (think Supergrass meets Shellac) we're struggling to think of one solitary loser who won't like this band. They're going to be the new Manic Street Preachers, but with less tights and eye-liner. NME (Tip for the Top, Jan 2009)

BILLY NO MATES

THE CUT UPS (Exeter)
'Imagine pop-punk if it was stripped of all the bullshit, posturing and pretence. You're probably imagining something akin to Exeter's The Cut Ups. Simple, honest and engaging, they're an all too rare example of melodic punk rock played from the heart. With an approach to politics that's more Billy Bragg than Billie Joe Armstrong, frontman Jon explains the ideas expressed in each song without ever resorting to empty sloganeering' - Rocksound Magazine

Sorry...THE ETTES gig is postponed to a later date due to recording committments.

Tue 7thClub Public presents:
*Jenners Fields
*Panda Obscura
*Buddha Tears
JENNERS FIELD
When the Observers’s Will Hodgkinson met Jenners Field earlier this year, he commented that their 'sheer ability would fill me with rage, were they not such nice boys.' The implication: how dare they be so good, and so young?
So, envy - that’s one, quite natural, reaction to witnessing Jenners Field. Another might be sheer gobsmacked admiration. Either way, they’ve been making quite an impression on people, ever since those early gigs, back in 2005, when the South London four-piece were even more youthful and a few powerful new compositions were starting to emerge from a scramble of ideas. The band’s sound (wound tight round a groove one minute, arcing skywards the next) has since been filled out with keyboards and harmonies, and the group has gained in stature with every gig, but that talent - that infuriating, inspiring talent - has always been in evidence. Back then you would have noticed the self-assurance and burgeoning charisma of singer Laurie; the strident rhythms courtesy of drummer Jed and bassist James; and the prodigious ability of guitarist Danilo, whose dazzling prowess is always at the service of the songs. And then they got even better, as it was obvious they would.
www.myspace.com/jennersfieldmusic

PANDA OBSCURA (London)
Panda Obscura are a band quite unlike any other. Literally. They are the meaning of what it is to be young, free and downright cool. Since their haphazard inception the wild stage shows and outlandish antics of enigmatic frontman Richard Flanagan have become infamous among the south London scene. With a unique blend of Funk/Indie and World influences, and instrumentation that will blow your mind, be sure to catch these guys whilst they’re still playing small venues.
(They're so cool they don't even have a myspace, so if you want to find out any more you just have to come to the show!)

BUDDHA TEARS (London)
When they started out a couple of years ago, Buddha Tears was a 3 piece consisting of vocals, guitar & drums. As they progressed, more musicians were added until a unique blend of jazz, skiffle and psychedelia splashed with elegant pop emerged.
Buddha Tears are beginning to make ripples in the new music scene and, having landed themselves a slot on the Leftfield Stage at Glastonbury Festival in 2008, expect those ripples to turn into waves sometime soon..

THIS GIG IS NOW SOLD OUT AND THERE WILL BE NO TICKETS ON THE DOOR.

BRAKES (Brighton)
Brakes are returning to The Windmill to kick-off a,lengthy UK tour to tie in with the release of their other-worldy third album ‘Touchdown’ on the wonderful Fat Cat label. Needless to say, we’re pretty damn excited!
Having started life back in 2003 Eamon & Co. have toured relentlessly with everyone from Buck 65 to The Killers. 2005 saw the release of their critically acclaimed debut LP ‘Give Blood’ which spawned the 5-second epic ‘Cheney’ – a vehement blast at the inaptitude and culpability of the former Vice President. The song has now been hailed by the band as the catalyst behind Barack Obama’s election and the saviour of a Sarah Palin-induced nuclear winter. But while The killers may have become the killed in a post-apocalyptic America, Brakes defiantly claim that 'even in a world destroyed by the total collapse of reason, we would've toured our music on acoustic guitars and a drum kit pushed in shopping trolleys'. It is this defiance that makes Brakes music, attitude and energy so endearingly charming in an age saturated with whingeing, egotistical indie-by-numbers bands!
www.myspace.com/brakesband

THE TAILORS (London)
A joyful celebration of people who are flawed and broken and lost and blue, The Tailors draw from elements of folk, garage-rock and the soulful pop of 70's AM country radio whilst mixing the outsider weirdness of bands like the Silver Jews with the country-tinged powerpop of early Wilco. Their debut album 'Wakey Wakey' got great reviews across the board and the follow-up is expected sometime.

RAE SPOON (Montreal)
...was born on the Canadian prairies of the 80's. In his early twenties he hit the road as one of the world's only transgender country singers and toured Canada, Europe, Australia and the USA.
'superioryouareinferior' is Rae's fourth solo album, and his first in over two years. Lyrically the album is his most revealing to date. His voice walks the highways from the Yukon to Newfoundland singing of whales that have gotten lost, the wolves in our imaginations, the Great Lakes, cabin fever, dancing with grizzlies, the psychology of a haunting ghost and the issues of ongoing colonialism.
Musically he traverses new territories from art folk, to indie-rock, to electronic/experimental and noise.

The acts we get to play usually play across the city at pricey gigs but because they love the vibe of the Basket Club they come down here and basically pay for tips..so although it's a free gig, please give generously and drop some cash in the Christmas Basket. Thanks.

BENJAMIN THOMAS BAND (London)
Making a name for himself on the London scene, this transplanted Swede offers a broader portfolio of emotions than your average Americana guy, taking in the doom of Cohen, the blues of Johnson, Guthrie's folk and the indie flavour of contemporaries such as Josh Ritter.
This a full band show with some nifty musicians in the ranks!

GOLDHEART ASSEMBLY
Shiny new sextet mixing up rich folksy ballads with exuberant poppy floorstompers. Attracting much attention form mags and DJs, they're a name to look out for.
They take a joyous acoustic beardy bunch of ideas and mess around with them like a cat playing with a ball of string. Already you could easily put them out on tour supporting Fleet Foxes or The Low Anthem (now there's an idea). And they smile at each other on stage - which is so out of character for new bands these days (unless it's a nervous tick) that it's actually quite infectious.' - Steve Lamacq

STANLEY
Your hosts for the evening, and launching their debut five-song EP 'Nothing To Say', Stanley excel at indie-country-pop joining the dots linking Gene Autry and Pixies. They've also added a trumpet to their ranks to show off some calexican skills.
They'll have copies on the night, which is always a better purchase than iTunes downloads (but you'll also be able to do that if you want)

CATS ON FIRE (Finland)
At long last, Finland's Cats On Fire return to the UK. If you haven't heard the foursome yet, you're in for a treat - their new album, 'Our Temperance Movement' sees jangling indie pop tussling with rip-roaring rock’n’roll, ornate REM-esque melodies squaring up to exuberant indie dancefloor smashes. Their new single, 'Tears In Your Cup', which has already been aired on BBC6 Music and Xfm, comes out the week of this show.
'Cats On Fire' sound like a mix between The Smiths, Felt and Belle and Sebastian. The guitars chime like it was 1986 again. The picture is complete when we add in a vocalist with a quiff and a penchant for sounding like a cross between Morrissey, Robert Smith and David Gedge.' - Adrian Denning

JE SUIS ANIMAL (Norway)
...mix late 80’s indie with a generous dose of 60’s psychedelia, a spoonful of naive melody and a pinch of girly harmonies into their magic potion. The result is magical, striking and uncannily beautiful. Having met at art school in the UK, the band settled in Oslo, Norway in 2004 and began forging a sound inspired by their love for dreamy melodic pop and all the best bits of their art degree. Their debut album Self-Taught Magic From a Book was recorded on a trip to an old community hall, deep within the remote woodlands of Norway. Besieged by hungry bears and curious locals, they recorded the album themselves over 7 days, going without sleep, and living on nothing but tea and gingerbread men.
'Je Suis Animal's sound is not a million miles from the Velvet Underground and Nico. However, their debut album's pretty harmonies, lovely melodies and general perkiness also point firmly in the direction of sunny scandinavian indie-pop. Jangly guitars and pretty female vocals sitting atop a bed of shoegazey noise.' - Rough Trade

LITTLE MY (Wales)
Little My are made up of 8 to 20 people from various Cardiff bands playing instruments ranging from guitars & stylophones to violins & dustbin lids. Their songs are short and sweet - and smell slightly of twee. Boy & boy & girl & girl vocals and interlaced melody layers hide the subdued and often morose lyrics. Playing live they have eight core ‘mys’ - supplemented where possible with up to 12 other 'satellite' members. The results have been described as like walking into a primary school music lesson... only the teacher is dressed as a bear and a cat is playing guitar! Little My have so far released 7 EPs, chronologically titled 'little my's first' up to 'little my's seventh', some self released and some on weepop! records & little pocket records labels.

*The Robocop Kraus
*Hot Panda
*Stained Glass Heroes
*Flash Fiktion
THE ROBOCOP KRAUS (Germany)
..formed in Nuremberg in 1998 but it wasn't until 2003 they picked up the pace in the UK when the band surpassed themselves with a both experimental and anthemic album 'Living With Other People', on the highly regarded Label L'Age D'Or.
Airplay on BBC Radio 1 was led by Zane Lowe, Steve Lamacq and Colin Murray while NME was very enthusiastic about their 'inspirational, imaginative Post-Punk'.
In short, The Robocop Kraus smashed all the undeniable prejudices against German Indie Rock, and after signing to Epitaph they released their most successful album to date, 'They Think They Are The Robocop Kraus', playing some of the big festivals and touring America with Art Brut.

HOT PANDA (Canada)
are a fresh new foursome who formed during the particularly chilly winter of 2006. Since then they've toured round Canada and the USA in a dodgy 1977 ambulance and now celebrate the release of 'Volcano...Bloody Volcano! on the esteemed Mint Records label (Neko Case, The New Pornographers, The Organ, The Hanson Brothers etc)
'Volcano...Bloody Volcano! is a collection of collaborative songs chock-full of the band's frenetic energy, reminiscent of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, State Bird, older Flaming Lips (think 'Tangerine'), with flashes of An Albatross. Comparisons to luminaries such as Daniel Johnston and The Talking Heads have been swirling about and whilst it’s always nice to be compared to such bands, Hot Panda have certainly found their own sound of pop, glam, gypsy swing & lo-fi indie with a rambunctiously theatrical live show for 'kids who like to dance'.

EDIE SEDGWICK (Washington DC)
Edie Sedgwick is the transgendered reincarnation of a vacuous Andy Warhol Superstar who died of a barbiturate overdose in 1971. A visionary artist who lay dormant in her host organism until his first epileptic seizure in 2001, Edie appeared at the dawn of the New Millenium to save the world by singing, writing, and producing video about celebrities. Armed with a video projector and backing band, Edie travels through the dark night presenting auditory and visual art that honors the likes of Sissy Spacek, Martin Sheen, and other celebrity co-conspirators.

Edie Sedgwick also happens to be Justin Moyer (El Guapo, Antelope) and his band and their new album 'Things are Getting Sinister and Sinisterer' is out on the mighty Dischord Records.
