 JOHN & JEHN (London)
Gallic alt-electro hipsters whose uber-cool debut album comes out at the end on April on Faculty Music.
like late shoegaze punks Electrelane with a pinch of Godard’s postmodern sex appeal and a cheeky dash of cabaret thrown in for good measure. - Drownedinsound
Their haunting, shadow-tinged melodies draw on a bevy of ’60s cultural watersheds: Serge Gainsbourg, the Velvet Underground, as well as more recent influences like Gang of Four and Joy Division. _ Flavorpill London

STAINED GLASS HEROES (Brixton)
After being holed up in the studio for a while SGH come back home to combine edgy postpunk vibes with the brainfood vibes of such influences as Can, Love, Broadcast and Faust. No longer hiding behind bands of synths and keys, this is a band that have stripped away the fat and are ready to get you rocking - and dancing.

Fri 2ndBackstreets V
*Black Daniel
*The Cubical
*Chalou Saint Jude
*Alphabet Backwards
Backstreets is a semi-regular night brought to you in association with webzine, Rockbeatstone.com and is now in its fifth edition. Previous headliners have included Prinzhorn Dance School, Official Secrets Act, the Mules… So you know to expect cutting edge music and a great Friday night vibe.

BLACK DANIEL (London/New York)
Formed by brothers Liam and Luke May (Medicine8) and New Yorker Craig Louis Higgins Jnr (pioneer of New York’s infamous Con-fu-sion nights), Black Daniel play dangerous electro-rock the likes of which LCD Soundsystem and Primal Scream can only dream of.
Their debut album was released last year to critical acclaim and they toured the arenas of Europe supporting Kasabian’s similar brand of dancy, bass heavy rock and roll. You can expect them to kick some serious arse as they mix their rock’n’beats on stage tonight. A perfect good time Friday night headliner.
www.myspace.com/blackdanielspace

THE CUBICAL (Liverpool)
Windmill debut for this band who have been causing quite a stir in recent times. This is psychedelic mutant garage blues which sounds as if Howlin’ Wolf had taken a particularly nasty acid tab, while the vocals would put Tom Waits to shame. They’ve recently headlined Alan McGhee’s Death Disco night, been featured in Spin magazine and described as 'raw genius' by the NME. Expect to be left gasping for air.
www.myspace.com/thecubicalthecubical

CHALOU SAINT JUDE (London)
Deep vocals, compelling guitar riffs and a sound which alludes to the Stones and the best of delta-blues, this is retro-rock with a compelling forward looking twist. Their songs have featured on MTV’s ‘King of the Roaring 20s’ and ‘She Said’ and they’ve recently been featured on compilation albums by Kool Tone Records and the Trash Society.
www.myspace.com/chalousaintjude

ALPHABET BACKWARDS (Oxford)
Backstreets favourites Alphabet Backwards are back playing a very special gig. James will be playing his intelligent folk-pop stripped down and bare in an acoustic setting. Expect uninterrupted smiles and laughs, only this time it's easier to dig the truly incredible lyrics that this man's head produces.

+ Rockbeatstone DJs ‘till late.

CASTANETS (San Diego, CA)
…. is an experimental one-man band composed of Raymond Raposa and any number of session musicians brought on for his albums and performances. Just one hour ago on that interweb thing he was probably labelled gothic country, avant-something and psych-something-or-other just before being analysed as constructing a musical clash between traditional stylings and modern intuition (avant-garde psychedelia).
After spending several years travelling round the USA on buses and playing gigs, Raposa and his maverick folk wares were signed up by the sterling Asthmatic Kitty label who have just released his third fine album ‘In the Vines’.
www.myspace.com/castanets

CREVECOEUR (France)
...could be the result of the encounter between Calexico and Pascal Comelade, or Henry Mancini and The Black Heart Procession.
Crevecoeur is an unusual French trio comprised of three young multi-instrumentalists playing guitars, percussions, harmonium, trumpets, violin and various toy-instruments. Their songs are mostly instrumental pieces, a tribute to the glorious days of soundtrack music, yet with a pop sensibility.
Their second album, neatly entitled #2 was released in April via Denovali/DSA records.

LAURA SINGS LIVER (London)
Equally at home on an indie or a folk bill, LSS is a new force on the capital scene, best summed up by a punter who compared her bittersweet songs like 'biting into a cream cake and finding a razor blade.

THE RANK DELUXE (South London)
Rowdy punk rock via a little reggae, Rank Deluxe have been tearing up South London for some time. Their shows regularly turn in to a spit and snarling affair involving sweat, vodka and tales of frustration and social commentary. The Sex Pistols meets Ian Dury.
'the rowdiest, angriest punk rock explosion in the capital' - NME
'thug-rock masterpiece' - Uncut

and VERY SPECIAL GUESTS:

DAVE CLOUD & THE GOSPEL OF POWER (Nashville, TN)
Mr David Cloud is a true original and veteran of the Nashville scene of some 25 plus years, confusing some, scaring others and exciting all along the way. Often invoking words like ‘shamanistic’, ‘beat’ and ‘maverick’, even the Sunday Times described his debut album in a glowing 4/5 review as the last genuine lost genius who achieves a 'transcendental psychedelic primitivism'. His totally unique warped vocals and freestyle lyrics also get him comparisons to Roky Erikson, Beefheart and Charles Bukowski.
Dave is also the current face and voice of the new Budweiser advertising campaign (a series of ads by Hollywood director Harmony Korine) wherein he is the mentor to a bunch of drunks playing covers. Thankfully his real-life band features members of Lambchop and Clem Snide!
He's previously toured Europe with The Silver Jews and was such a hit in Norway, they've even named a bar in Bergen after him!
A true legend. Do not miss!

CRIMES OF THE FUTURE (London)
The new wave indie electro-pop stylings have grabbed the attention of the people of Zap Records (Die Die Die, Smatka) who will be putting out their next single ‘Screen Villains’. The male/female vocals make sweet melodies that you want to lick. And you will try it.
'The kind of cool melodies most bands would sell their dear old granny for' - Artrocker magazine

JACK JACK DAW (London)
Formerly The Low Sky. Theres three of them, there’s rock, there’s melody and theres a tingling bit of sinisterness about them.

DAVE GRANEY & CLARE MOORE feat THE LURID YELLOW MIST (Melbourne, Aus)
Dave Graney is one of Australia's three great, and of the worlds seven great songwriters. He is also one of the wildest performers. He qualifies as the weirdest and the most regular. And that's why Nick Cave has probably invited him to support him and the Bad Seeds on his current European tour.
Dave was also in The Sputniks, The Moodists, The Coral Snakes, The Royal Dave Graney Show and The Dave Graney show with drummer and another Aus legend Clare Moore and together they make an inspired cross of rock crossed with 60s Italian horror soundtracks dressed in a resplendent enigmatic wit.

Ex-Babyshambles guitarist Patrick Walden is in fact an accomplished jazz player and tonight stretches out in his new 'power trio' with new Acoustic Ladyland bassist Ruth Goller and gigantically Afro'd drum lord, Seb Rochford. This is yet another band blurring genric boundaries by mixing jazz and indie rock. Who'd have thunk it could work so well?

SKALLYWAGS (London)
Displaying more swagger than seen at a swag-off between a Liam Gallagher convention and a cockney walk appreciation society, Skallywags are fast becoming one of the best live bands on the circuit. Playing bass driven ska/punk they rip through their sets covered in (more often than not) blood, sweat and tears. The way it should be done. Winners of 'The Peoples Choice' award at the first ever 'Indy Music Awards'. Miss this band at your peril!
they pride themselves on hard-hitting lyrics and stuttering ska basslines. (NME)

THE RGBs
..are a day-glo riot of electro-pop and the subject of frenzied A&R interest at the moment.
The RGBs might just be the best live ticket in town this summer. See them now, before they become huge. NME
Mesmerising - like Kate Bush at an Ibizan rave – please can they support us?! Tom Findlay, Groove Armada
..a music that is undoubtedly unique. Through atmospheric music, quirky characters and witty lyricism they create a world that is far away from our own.– Wall of Sound
www.myspace.com/thergbs

NAKED & THE BOYS (London)
…are getting bigger and bigger everyday with their folk/pop perfect tunes and backing from the Young and Lost club crew. A three piece armed with will-be-chart-bothering hits aplenty. Be warned though not a band to see on a first date…they wooing factor is turned up to 11!
Their debut ‘If You Find Love’ is refreshingly understated and lush. Laid back and evocative, there’s a nice undercurrent of summery warmth to it - GigWise

ARMS AT LAST (Liverpool)
…fans of Hot Club de Paris and elle S’appelle will love Arms at Last. Jangling, angular pop songs with more clever hooks than a clever hook shop. They encapsulate all the best components of the Liverpool scene and have been featured by Steve Lamacq on New Music We Trust.

they’ve carved out a seventeen-sided gem…acoustic Americana with a punk tinge…wonderful riffage…this album ambles along gently, the guitar is sparse and melodic. MAPS magazine

AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR (Belfast)
....are the 'The most talked about band in the country over the past 12 months' according to
BBC Northern Ireland Radio's authoritative Across The Line programme.
Their debut album 'This is Our Machine and Nothing Can Stop It' which has just had a full UK release via Forte Distribution, has won them fans throughout the UK.
Check these credits below:
Imagine Mogwai were from Belfast and had massive balls - VICE Magazine
The sound of someone crashing an oil tanker through Sigur Ros’ ice float - NME
really rather special....it is rare for a body of work to be so dreamy and elegiac yet conversely monstrously heavy....sounds like the end of the world!! - KERRANG!

SECONDSMILE (Bridport)
Big Scary Monsters signings who’ve just finished recording our new album with Andrew Schneider (Cave-In, Pelican, Daughters etc).
The Dorset boys hold anger and big jagged riffs way back, tricking listeners into a false sense of security before smacking them round the head like rock gremlins exposed to the sunlight - KERRANG!

MAYBESHEWILL (Leicester)
Post-metallurgists with an anticipated debut album out this month on Nottingham's noisy little Field Records.
Fantastic Band... We’re in awe, It sounds absolutely brilliant - Huw Stephens, Radio 1
Maybeshewill sound like Mogwai would if the latter had ever found love in an arthouse cinema. And then were beaten around the head with a keyboard. - Drowned in Sound

MINNAARS (Leicester)
Spikey Indie-Pop from ex Tired Irie, Computerman and Traces boys. Think Youthmovies, This Town Needs Guns or Foals - only eight times as danceable. Currently recording their debut EP with Tom from iForward Russia!, This is their first outing to the big city

SHOT BY BOTH SIDES
A spektakular soireé of degeneracy and bloodlust!

Shot By Both Sides
– London's premier purveyors of arcane, outlandish and fantastical musical delights - launch another sordid spektakular, on Friday 30th May. This is a gathering in the intimate surroundings of Brixton Windmill – their first soiree at the venue since Christmas 2006.
Disregarding the patronising idiocy of bargain-bin indie nights, SBBS offers a ramshackle assortment of music, poetry, performance, spoken-word and strange men leering. Influenced by everything from the Antifolk scene to C86, from beat-poetry through to Rick Wakeman's 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth', it is a heady, kaleidoscopic and keck-soiling experience. Doubtlessly topped-off with some silly haircuts.
Expect a thrilling soundtrack of wonky psych, gritty '60s garage, gnarled folk, freakout jazz, rockabilly, C86 indie and Northern Soul, poetry, stories, free ‘zines, various handouts, literature/tape exchange, some peculiar visual treats, cakes, a few out-of-the-hat surprises and some sensational live sets from…

LUPEN CROOK & THE MURDERBIRDS
Gnarled, twisted folk and bleeding-heart candor from Britain’s most underrated songwriter. Fresh from delivering second LP ‘Iscariot The Ladder’, Crook’s edge-of-the-ledge, bloody-minded mini-masterpieces pack more high-drama than most can ever aspire to. Intense, bug-eyed and vehement; this will be a performance to savour.
Lupen Crook stands alone as one of the few artists around who seriously defies categorisation – The Fly
A bewitching talent – Uncut
Original and highly concentrated stuff - Mojo
…An air of insanity and a genuine edge-of-the-seat brilliance – The Sun
www.myspace.com/lupencrook

DAVID CRONENBERG’S WIFE
Achieving something-resembling-legendary status on the UK Antifolk circuit, DCW are a band that deserve to be treasured – and not just for their fabulous moniker. Raw, early-80s, Fall-fried sounds clash with Tom Mayne’s incisive lyrics – which come-on equal-parts sardonic, wide-eyed and bitter. The punk-edged carnival of mental breakdown that you can dance to.
Dark and twisted as the name suggests – London Metro
David Cronenberg’s Wife sound like a mid-Eighties independent band – sarcastic, sardonic and articulate, with gothic undertones, a little bit of shambling, some David Lunch surf guitar…the focus is on the songwriting – Everett True, Plan B magazine
www.myspace.com/davidcronenbergswife

LEFT WITH PICTURES
An experimental, emotionally-frazzled three-piece with pop at their core. In some mysterious hinterland between the Beach Boys, The Beta Band and Barett-era Floyd, their classical affectations are coupled with a range of instruments – from Gregorian plainchant to electronic tape loops – to create glorious technicolor ‘chamber-pop’. Or, as they’d have it, 'Claude Debussy on a shoestring budget'.
Left With Pictures, though relatively early on in their career, have legs enough for walking, swooning, harmonizing and lilting with the very best of their contemporaries – Drowned In Sound
www.myspace.com/leftwithpictures

THE PHANTOM LOVERS
The kind of band that leaves journalists scraping for adjectives to describe the sheer girth of sound on offer. Monstrous ‘soundscapes’ and downbeat torch-songs – ornamented by Elsie Martins’ brooding vocals – with an ‘80s shoegaze vibe. Grab the nearest sodden overcoat, for this is truly The Big Music.
Dark and subtly textured, moodily atmospheric soundscapes - Time Out
