Let’s go baboon presents David Cronenberg’s Wife album launch evening with guests

THOMAS TRUAX (New York, NY)
Thomas Truax is a troubadour, inventor and player of strange self-made instruments. His now legendary 'Hornicator' is constructed out of the shell of an old gramophone horn and resembles something dreamt up by Dr. Seuss. His songs are well-crafted vignettes, often witty and touching.

DAVID CRONENBERG'S WIFE (London)
.The band will be launching their debut album ‘Bluebeard’s Rooms’ at this show. Expect to see heaps more glowing reviews to follow Everrit True of Plan B magazine who said, 'David Cronenberg's Wife sound like a mid-Eighties independent band -- sarcastic, sardonic and articulate, with dark gothic undertones, a little bit of shambling, some David Lynch surf guitar... the focus is on the songwriting.'
A superb name for a superb 'antifolk' band led by the seemingly mild-mannered but ferocious lyricist Tom Mayne —London Lite
www.myspace.com/davidcronenbergswife

DAN FISHBACK (New York, NY)
From the gloriously catchy New York pop act Cheese On Bread, Dan Fishback performs a rare London show. An acclaimed writer/songwriter/performer/ playwright and permanent fixture alongside Jeffrey Lewis in the East Village's notorious anti-folk scene, he is about to release his second solo album 'Mammal' - a joyous mix of slick radio pop and lo-fi anti-folk.
Dan Fishback is a funny, bouncy pop upstart - Time Out New York

EMILY BARKER & THE RED CLAY HALO (Australia)
A welcome return to the Windmill for Barker who is a remarkable singer, songwriter and performer joined by her backing band the Red Clay Halo. Emily is one to watch and should be far better known in the UK. She has performed at Cambridge Folk Festival, Glastonbury and Shepherds Bush Empire. Beautifully melodic Americana, her voice has been described as willowy and plaintive with more than a touch of Gillian Welch and Neko Case (UNCUT).
She is one of those talents that comes along once in a lifetime, if you're lucky Maverick magazine

Sun 3rdTHERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH COVERS
*Special Guests as The Modern Lovers
*Stuffy & The Fuses as Pixies
*4 or 5 Magicians as Guided By Voices
*Giant Robot & The City of Tokyo as ARCHERS OF LOAF
*Pale Man Made as Sonic Youth
*Favours For Sailor
THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH COVERS
A half-day spectacular showcasing the cream of the current crop of British alt-rock, and paying tribute to the American greats of the late 80's and early 90's that influenced them. Bands will play a minimum of two covers each by their chosen band, interwoven with their own lesser known indie rock masterpieces.

SPECIAL GUEST HEADLINER as JONATHAN RICHMAN AND THE MODERN LOVERS!
No lies - it's only 50/50 at this stage whether he can do it or not, but we could well have a very special guest along to perform with an assembly of friends as the last of three Massachusetts bands on the bill, seminal talky-art-rock troupe The Modern Lovers. NB. It's not actually Jonathan Richman.
www.myspace.com/theoriginalmodernlovers

STUFFY AND THE FUSES are PIXIES
Britain's premier drummer / lead vocalist (since the sad retirement from music of Phil Collins) Stuffy, and his band The Fuses, make the mammoth trek from ... round the corner, to take on Boston's finest The Pixies. Expect crashing drums, angular guitars, pounding bass, whirring keyboard, plenty of alt-rock related banter. And some Pixies songs!
www.myspace.com/stuffythefuses
www.myspace.com/pixies

4 OR 5 MAGICIANS are GUIDED BY VOICES
Fresh from gaining a Lamacq single of the week for recent 7-inch 'Change The Record' and an interview as his 'New Favourite Band', Brighton's 4 or 5 Magicians return to the Windmill Brixton to become Dayton, Ohio lo-fi rock giants for the night. Expect a full 40 minute Guided By Voices set comprising songs from the classic 1987 - 1995 period!

GIANT ROBOT AND THE CITY OF TOKYO as ARCHERS OF LOAF
Norwich has produced some great bands over the past few years, but sadly, due to the A11 being such a shit road, they haven't got out enough. Well rejoice then, as we bring you probably the best of the lot, Giant Robot and the City Of Tokyo, for a rare London gig (and last before vocalist/guitarist Mikey relocates indefinitely to America).
Giant Robot are so good that it is they and only they who have been given the accolade of doing some blistering indiepunk anthems from Chapel Hill, North Carolina's ARCHERS OF LOAF - the Greatest Of All Time. Fact.
www.myspace.com/giantrobotiii
www.myspace.com/archersofloaf

PALE MAN MADE as SONIC YOUTH
Pale Man Made are from Newcastle but are making the arduous 5 (or 6, or 7) hour journey to London to play for us. They recently gained a Huw Stephens album of the week for their debut record 'Oh My Treasured Things', and have a drummer who is the double of Steve Shelley. Fittingly, they will perform a couple of the hits of New York alt-rock pinoeers Sonic Youth for us, amongst their own melody-laden pop gems.

FAVOURS FOR SAILORS as WEEZER
Adopted Londoners Favours For Sailors always sounded great as a three piece, but since recruiting ex-4 or 5 Magicians guitarist Matt Hayward (now known as Maltese Falcon) to the fold they have opened up a veritable pandora's box of guitar possibilites. One of which being that they can take on replicating the famous duelling guitar assualt of Californian geek-rock legends Weezer.
www.myspace.com/favours4sailors
www.myspace.com/weezer

DUTCH HUSBAND as SEBADOH
Bournemouth is the last place you'd expect to find the best band in the UK, but if you venture down to the Dorset coast and catch Dutch Husband on the right night, then you may well come away thinking you had! But thanks to us you don't have to (though I would recommend going, it has a lovely beach!) as we've brought them here to The Windmill for an ultra-rare London outing. A member down as their bass player is off travelling the world, the band take on classic Massachusetts slacker 3-piece Sebadoh.

www.myspace.com/sehbahdough

HOUR HANDS as BUILT TO SPILL
Hour Hands are from Brighton and always have been - a refreshing, organic, homegrown talent, and a shining beacon in a music scene flooded by well dressed, but ultimately souless, mediocre, production line bands churned out by the music college. If there was any band in the UK to take on the jaunty pop (i'm guessing we'll be looking at Distopian Dream Girl rather than Randy Described Eternity here!) of Boise, Idaho's Built To Spill, then it is Hour Hands. See if you can tell which are covers and which aren't! As the seminal Built To Spill Record is titled 'there's nothing wrong with love'. There's also nothing wrong with covers!

MATHS CLASS (Brighton)
Less than two years in and Maths Class’ quest for world domination has already seen them gain support slots with the likes of Foals and Battles. With a plethora of UK Festivals lying in their wake and the impending release of their debut EP ‘Now This Will Take Two Hands’, Maths Class are quickly building up a reputation for being what the NME call 'the sort that cause impromptu nosebleeds'.

OFFICIAL SECRETS ACT (London)
Sometimes you come across a band and are immediately taken by their freshness, their exuberance and most importantly their musical spunk. The Official Secrets Act do this, imagine British Sea Power hooked up on sugar and playing with Maximo Park, this isn’t what this trio sounds like it, but you’d be getting close.
Foot-stomping bass lines, enigmatic performances, and songs so catchy, frankly it’s sickening. And it’s EXACTLY what we love to hear. ‘The Art of Being Sure’ recently featured on an Artrocker compilation, and is nothing sort of brilliant. If there’s a musical war going on, then these are the snipers, short, sharp and deadly....

THE KABEEDIES (Norwich)
This is clever artrock, like a female fronted Goodshoes , delivering both musically and lyrically. Any song with the lyric 'Silly little rich kids could'nt take their drugs' is genius in my book. This song is insanely catchy and deserves to be a hit. - ArtRocker

THE WEEK THAT WAS (Sunderland/Newcastle)
...emerged from an imagined crime thriller dreamt up by Field Music's Peter Brewis and inspired by Paul Auster's labyrinthine storytelling.
Musically TWTW's cinematic pop pays direct (and indirect) homage to the wildly ambitious Linn Drum and Fairlight experiments of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel and Tin Drum-era Japan.
The self-titled album, released by Memphis Industries on 18 August has already received much love from Radios 1 and 6 and this full band show features other well-known Field Music collaborators.
in these crop-to-fit times, omnivorous visionary pop is at a premium, and there's all the more reason to prize an omnivorous, visionary pop record like The Week That Was MOJO Magazine - Album of the Month
pop at its most outrageously ambitious. Executed with serious flair, it manages the rare feat of being both mentally
stimulating and musically satisfying. It is, in every regard, one of the most daring albums you'll hear this year.

Comparisons to the likes of Tom Waits and Nick Drake are a welcome branding that is dispelled almost as immediately as it is cast. A wider sphere of influence is clearly audible, with vibes such as Mogwai and conscious hiphop also present in the music.
They've recently toured with Rumble Strips and for now remain (rather headscratchingly) one of the south's best secrets.

*THE WAR ON DRUGS
*BOWERBIRDS
*KURT VILE
THE WAR ON DRUGS (Philadelphia, PA)
The War On Drugs are a fresh face that already sounds like an old friend. Bringing a dose of the West Coast to the hard streets of Philadelphia, their songs recall the ‘80s guitar army of Sonic Youth, the captivating lyrics and vocal stylings of Tom Petty and the sheer inventiveness of Neutral Milk Hotel.
The War On Drugs point toward a tireless horizon in the distance that you will never reach but are compelled to chase. Guitars soar and colourful clouds roll past whatever sun or moon you are cruising under, through whatever old bar you are reveling within.
The War On Drugs debut album Wagonwheel Blues, released to across-the-board acclaim, is the best thing we’ve heard all year. Fact.
The War On Drugs push the boundaries of American music.
www.myspace.com/thewarondrugs

BOWERBIRDS (Raleigh, NC)
All three members of Bowerbirds share intertwined vocal harmonies, and paired with the acoustic instrumentation, have conjured a mystical, gorgeous debut album ‘Hymns for a Dark Horse’, that’s due out mid-August and is sure to set the critics reeling.
Predominantly acoustic and flecked with accordion and piano, their touching songs reflect the organic, rural, simple way of life that they live way, in the backwaters of the North Carolina state capital, on a quiet plot of land that is completely off the grid. You can just imagine songs as beautiful as these having been written underneath a moonlit sky, joyously sung around a campfire.
Only once every ten years or so does one hear a new band this good, this bursting with ideas, this audibly in love with music... It is beyond stunning. This band is the complete package. - John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats

Mendicant
+ friends
MENDICANT (Crystal Palace)
A south London seven-piece gem, Mendicant stick exclusively to acoustic instruments with cello, banjo, guitar, violin, flute and brass illustrating songwriter Barnaby Cole's late night narratives.

THE KINGSIZE FIVE
The Kingsize Five are one of the most refreshing bands in London at the moment. They bring 1920s good time swing up to date with a healthy dose of Rock n Roll. You’re feet wont know what’s hit them.
Amazing: I predict this will spread through the country like a virus - Shaun Keaveney, BBC 6 Music Breakfast Show
A manic mix of rocking blues and jazzy, dirty swing delivered with riffed up panache Molloy Woodcraft, The Observer

THE BRIDGE (London)
Groovy floor shaking soul and strutting funk. Swaggering bass line, shimmering percussion, sexy horns and Sly and the Family Stone bluster. Party music for party people. A little bit of funk is all you need.
The Bridge goes off like a bass line in a ballet class...Funk is alive and well and living in London BASE ROCK

KINZLI (London)
Hypnotically beautiful jazz and lounge that is full of laid back charm an elegance. From the hushed drums, through to the sultry Saxophone which is all topped off by Kinzli’s heartfelt and honest vocals.
Kinzli is a musical magpie picking up the shiny bits everyone loves from an impressive range of genres. So much so, Going Just To Be Going is more like a great compilation tape than an album from one artist. The Fly

ABIGAIL HOPKINS
Having an early love for reading/writing and listening to classical music, she showcases these influences in her albums using her strong lyrics, infused with the ability to evoke emotion, and an at times cacophonous sound. Abigail has released three albums, the acclaimed debut album Smile Road was followed with Blue Satin Alley which displays a mesmerizing gritty sound, reminiscent of PJ Harvey. This year, Abigail released The Memoirs of an Outlaw on Basilica Music, her finest work to date.
If you are looking for music that takes it to the edge, lyrics that you are not going to hear on mainstream radio and vocals that will leave you on the edge of your seat for all the right reasons then make ‘The Memoirs Of An Outlaw’ the next CD you buy. It’s scary, it’s beautiful…it’s real - PENNY BLACK Magazine

EMILY BARKER
A rare solo performance for this remarkable singer, whose recent appearances have included the Cambridge Folk Festival, Glastonbury and Shepherds Bush Empire. A beautiful melodic mix of alt-folk and Americana, her voice has been described by UNCUT magazine as willowy and plaintive with more than a touch of Gillian Welch and Neko Case.
She is one of those talents who comes along once in a lifetime if you’re lucky - MAVERICK Magazine

KATHLEEN HASKARD
A 4th generation native Californian who divides her time between the rooftops of South East London and a tipi in a canyon on the Pacific Coast in the Santa Monica Mountains above Ventura County Line. Kathleen released her acclaimed CD Don’t Tell on her own label Howlin’ Hound in 2007. The CD is full of folk-rock/noir and secretive ballads with a hint of blues brought to life on stage with intense renditions of her literate songs
Smart and aware songwriter, both politically and emotionally… a record of rare quality - BUCKETFULL OF BRAINS

CATHERINE PAVER
writes folk-and-country influenced songs that tell stories, taking the listener from the Wild Coast of Africa to the goldmines of the American West. With a powerful, melodic voice, accompanied by an inimitable finger-picking style on acoustic guitar, Catherine has supported many prominent songwriters such as Bob Cheevers, James Keelaghan, Clive Gregson and Nick Kelly.

AITCH!
After many years playing guitar to herself and the dog, in January 2008 Aitch started writing, singing and playing her own original material. Mainly encouraged by friends, local promoters and a healthy sprinkling of alcohol she is a rising talent on the new acoustic scene. Her eclectic sound is mellow alt-folk with shades of country and pop with a voice midway between Kate Rusby and Lisa Loeb

SMILING KNIFE (Brighton)
Born in a skanky rehearsal room in 2005, Smiling Knife are an all female trio busily recording their debut album 'Mummy Provides'. They mix up melodic indie, folk and pop and they tell dark tales in pretty, harmonic tunes. Their quirky story songs take you from the mean streets of the city to the banks of the River Seine.
